Kentucky Town 'Wins' a John Edwards Visit

August 21, 2007 05:53 PM ET | Permanent Link | Print

Internet users in Dallas, Denver, and Los Angeles all wanted presidential hopeful John Edwards to pop by their cities, but apparently not as much as the residents of the tiny rural town of Columbus, Ky. The town was the winner of the "Demand and Be Heard" competition sponsored by the Edwards campaign and the website Eventful.com.

Eventful.com is a site where users can vote on which musicians, politicians, and other personalities they'd like to host. Of course, there's no guarantee that a celebrity will pay a call, but the website has gotten a positive response from Edwards, Sen. Barack Obama, and Ron Paul.

While Columbus boasts a population of 229 and is a 50-minute drive from the nearest McDonalds, activist Shawn Dixon encouraged residents and outsiders to vote for the tiny town. "If you aren't from Hickman County, this would be a great place to send a presidential candidate," Dixon wrote on Eventful.com. "It's a beautiful town in the heart of rural America set on the banks of the Mississippi River." The town garnered 1,841 votes, almost double the number of the second-place finisher, Eureka, Calif.

The date for Edwards's appearance in Columbus has not been set.
