Morning Buzz: Aug. 20, 2007

Officials say they may never find the six trapped Utah miners who have been missing after the Crandall Canyon mine collapsed two weeks ago. Mine owners had remained hopeful until the end of last week, when three rescue workers were killed when the mountain "bumped" and a portion of the mine collapsed once more. Four bore hills were drilled and experts lowered cameras and other sensors into the caverns, but no signs of life were detected. Family members are outraged that efforts have been halted and are demanding that the company drill a 30-inch hole to drop down a rescue capsule, the same device that was used to rescue nine miners from the Quecreek Mine in western Pennsylvania in 2002. However, the conditions at Crandall Canyon are much more unstable.

President Bush begins a two-day summit in Montebello, Quebec, today with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Mexican President Felipe Calderón. On the agenda: security, health, and commerce. Protestors in Ottawa started yesterday, noting their objections to Canada's troop presence in Afghanistan and the partnership between the three countries.

All 165 passengers escaped this morning when a China Airlines jet touched down in Okinawa, caught fire, and subsequently blew up. Passengers used emergency slides to exit and the pilot jumped from the cockpit seconds before the plane exploded. Officials do not suspect terrorism.
