Explosive Growth in Mobile Networking

August 16, 2007 03:47 PM ET | Permanent Link | Print

A pair of new studies predicts an explosive growth of social networking through mobile devices in the next five years, including a 10-fold increase in revenue generated by user content. Juniper Research forecasts that sites that allow people to network through their cellphones will reach 600 million users by 2012 and account for half of the predicted $5.7 billion revenue from content sharing. That study, which costs a small fortune, is available online.

Meanwhile, M:Metrics, a mobile industry research group, reports that 7.5 million people in the United States accessed a social media site from their phone in the month of June, as did an additional 4.8 million worldwide.

As U.S. News reported last week, companies that cater to this crowd are doing everything they can to encourage growth, particularly by creating partnerships with cellular companies to distribute phones with preinstalled software for content sharing, which greatly facilitates the process.
