U.S. and Iraqi military forces in Iraq began a major new offensive over the weekend to rout out suspected militants in the outskirts of Baghdad. At least 36 people were killed according to one account, the AP reports.

Meanwhile, a U.S.-led airstrike on a religious school in Afghanistan errantly killed seven children, Reuters reports.

The United Nations and the government of Sudan have agreed to the basic tenets of a joint U.N.-African Union peacekeeping force for the region, which has stood at the center of an international effort to halt the bloodshed in Sudan's Darfur region.

Major retailers are pulling copies of the popular video game "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas" from shelves after the industry slapped the bestseller with an "adults only" rating for explicit sexual content. The game's producer, Rockstar Games, had originally contended that the explicit scenes were created by third parties who provided the modified content online.

The Washington Post reports further negligence at the Walter Reed Medical Center, the subject of a lengthy investigation by the newspaper into poor care for wounded veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
