Gonzales Wins Senate Vote

June 12, 2007 03:43 PM ET | Permanent Link | Print

Try as they might, it seems the Democrats just can’t get rid of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

Yesterday, Senate Republicans blocked a resolution “expressing the sense of the Senate that Attorney General Alberto Gonzales no longer holds the confidence of the Senate and of the American people,” sponsored by New York Democrat Chuck Schumer.

The Senate tally on a motion to cut off debate on the measure was 53 to 38, just seven senators shy of achieving the 60 votes needed.

While Congress can’t just oust Gonzales--there’s a whole impeachment process for that--Senate Democrats hoped that an affirmative “no confidence” vote might just get the message across.

Gonzales has gotten heat for the past few months after the firings of eight U.S. attorneys looked to be politically motivated.
