Bush's Legacy: A Conservative Court

Those of us who have maintained that President Bush will leave only a string failures as his legacy are mistaken. He has left us with a conservative Supreme Court, possibly for a number of years. He would consider that an accomplishment.

Gitmo Closing: an Easy Call for Bush

The lines appear to be drawn on closing the country's notorious prison at Guantánamo Bay.

Robert Gates and Condoleezza Rice are for it; Dick Cheney and Alberto Gonzales are against it.

This should be an easy choice for President Bush, the so-called decider, who says he wants to shut it down—but not yet. He is not deciding.

Bloomberg a Long Shot at Best

For those counting on a Mayor Michael Bloomberg's candidacy as a paved road to the White House, hedge your bets and take a deep breath.

Don't get me wrong. Bloomberg has a remarkable record in New York City. He's a leader who knows what he's doing and how to get things done.

However, the political field is strewn with third-party or independent candidates who try to buck the two-party system. Even when the major candidates are considered weak, outsiders are shunned.

Don't Blame Democrats for Congressional Inaction

In recent polls, voters express almost as much unhappiness with the Democratic controlled Congress as they do with President Bush.

Some of the anger at Congress is deserved. The Democrats have been unable to move much of the agenda they talked about so earnestly in last year's campaign. Their rhetoric on the still disastrous war in Iraq has failed to produce much more than rhetoric.
