Replace Justice Souter with a Woman on the Supreme Court? Why Not Make It Two?

By Mary Kate Cary, Thomas Jefferson Street blog

My colleague Bonnie Erbe writes today that she doubts Hillary Clinton would be interested in a seat on the Supreme Court, but I think Bonnie and I agree it would be great to have the next opening on the court filled by a woman.

This morning's Politico:

At the top of the most-mentioned lists are federal Judge Sonia Sotomayor of New York, who is both female and Hispanic; Elena Kagan, Obama's solicitor general, who may not have been in the job long enough to go to the Court, and Diane Wood, a judge on the Chicago-based U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit who worked in the Justice Department under both Presidents Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton. Also mentioned: Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm (D).

In fact, if Justices Stevens and Ginsberg retire soon as well, it would be wise to appoint two women to the Supreme Court, so we don't get into the box of a single "women's seat" on the bench.
