Finally some facts - thank you!

Bardsmith from TX, I just want to say thanks for sharing that budget graph. This is helpful to the conversation. I find it puzzling though, because it was my understanding that the programs Obama proposed would be mostly covered by the tax increase on the highest earning bracket. I have a feeling that he will have to make a lot of compromises anyway, so I'm not too worried that something like this will pass as-is. As far as our economy goes, I do see this as an investment in the "business" that is our country. Just like any business, to grow it you need to invest in it. So we are making an investment in our infrastructure -- most importantly our energy production. If we can become energy independent, and lead the world in clean energy production, we will have accomplished much, and turned our economic lemons into lemonade. This is the American spirit that I love. I believe we can do this. Think of it as a business loan to America. Our business will be booming again before long, and we'll look back on these days and know we made the right choice. The other option is to languish in mediocrity and prolonged struggle. That's not an attractive option, and not very American. Obama may have miscalculated by trying to do too much all at once. We'll see where this all goes. Meanwhile, I do think everyone should speak their mind, however I would really like to see everyone do that without attacking each other. Much love to the big TX from sunny AZ.

What kind of kool aid are the people on the left drinking?

The tea parties were not about Obama. They were not about democrats or republicans. They were about excess government growth, taxes and spending. Plain and simple. The republicans overspent when they had a chance to cut back and it cost them dearly. I hope the democrats who have chosen to show the republicans how to grossly overspend are similarly punished. It is time we went back to a government 'of the people, by the people and for the people'.

Bush deficit vs. Obama deficit

There is an easy way to compare the Bush deficits vs. the Obama deficits. Just take a look at this graph that was in the Washington Post last month.

The Bush deficits are the gray bars; Obama's are the red. All the spending below the line is money we don't have -- money we will have to borrow. Even Democratic Senator Kent Conrad called the Obama budget deficit "totally unsustainable."

THIS is why about a million of us were protesting at tea parties on April 15. We are motivated by fear for our children and grandchildren, who will bear the burden of government overspending.

Are you kidding me? FOX News is the most-watched news show on cable. Something like 40 million people watch it every day. And that station is as conservative as Newt Gingrich and Pat Robertson. And hello... the most popular radio shows in every little nook of the American landscape are conservatives, i.e. Limbaugh, Hannity, Liddy, Savage, Beck, etc. There is absolutely no way you can tell me that conservative viewpoints are not more than adequately represented in the media. Conservatives already own plenty of media outlets. How many more do you need to take over before you feel comfortable? Do you need to completely squash debate and oppress the opposing viewpoint just to feel OK with the world? If so, I suggest a totalitarian dictatorship for you.

I'm not sure why you think that Bush did not spend us $10 trillion into debt -- unless all you watch is FOX News. It has been widely reported and agreed to across the board as fact. I think it's actually you who needs to check your facts before speaking (or writing). Additionally, I'm not a partisan person. I'm a registered Independent, and always have been. Except for two years when I was registered as a Republican. I have voted for members of both major parties many times throughout my life, as well as third party candidates and independent candidates. You also seem very free with your insults against someone you don't even know. I would gladly challenge you to an intellectual debate on any topic you can name. And as far as your little tidbit of tax info is concerned, yes I do know that. But I think obviously you don't know that the top 1% of wage earners in this country are all billionaires. With my less than $250,000 per year (significantly less), I'm right in the middle of the middle class. Those are the people in this country who do most of the hard work that keeps our country going. We need to look out for their interests, too, and not just the interests of the "Top." Those people at the "Top" are not all there just because they work harder than everybody else. Some do, some don't. But teachers, police officers and military personnel work plenty hard, too. And they make a tiny fraction of what those people at the "Top" make who you want to protect. Small business owners like myself, also work plenty hard. And in times like this we need a government that works with us, not against us. Which is why I was so happy to see George W. leave and Obama arrive in the White House. He may not be perfect, but he's a whole lot better of an option than what we've had.

Actually, the people voted

I must point out that this silly idea that somehow the "crazy democrats" pulled one over on everyone. The race wasn't even close, America voted and the conservatives are now crying. Does this seem familiar? Yes it is exactly what the liberals did in 2004 (I will exclude 2000 because quite frankly complaints were probably warranted). Also, I am amused with this idea that neo-conservatives are convinced that these taxes have somehow been cast upon them by a guy that has been in office for 2 months. Note I say neo-conservatives because they are not conservatives; I am a conservative, not "a f*****g crazy" as Colin Powell accurately described the neo-cons. They give real conservatives a bad name. The US as a country has been running up the tabs for the last 8 years, including the final act of bailing out the good-old boys on Wall St, that wasn't the liberals, that was the idiotic neo-cons. REAL conservatives aren't out putting teabags on their heads like idiots, they are sitting at home realizing that the bills have come due for all the ridiculous crap we bought over the last 8 years. Running a deficit every year and paying for everything in Iraq (while their country runs an $80 bill/month surplus from oil) has come back to haunt us. Just like idiots that took out big loans and ran up their credit cards are discovering right now, eventually you have to start thinking about paying for all the credit you've run up. As a true conservative, WE NEED TO STOP SPENDING SO MUCH MONEY! The taxes are because the idiots we had in office for the last decade have run up our tab and left us with the bill. I never liked Clinton, but at least when he was there we had a surplus, granted we should have used that to pay off our debt instead of on stupid programs, I still appreciate that he had us running out of the red. Now, we've blown a ton of money "opening up the credit markets." You can't blame the current guy for that problem, the idiot that asked for $800 billion, no strings attached is the guy you can blame for that.

To Take an English Class

Ad Hominum attacks are just what the country needs right now. We have a growing divide over political parties, sexual orientation, poor oversight by congress, poor behavior by wall street, etc... Please stay on point instead of taking the low road.

Go forth and protest

Yes, we liberals are getting a chuckle, but the anger lots of Amercans are feeling should not be dismissed. This IS America, and we all have a right to protest. I will never understand some of the right wing view, just as they will never understand mine. But I respect all the tea-baggers. They have practiced the all American right of protest. GOOD FOR YOU!
