A Soda Tax Won't End Obesity

October 29, 2009 04:09 PM ET | Permanent Link | Print

I'm sure that President Obama and Democrats realize that taxing soda and juice, a sugar tax in essence, will do nothing to end obesity, [any] more than high cigarette taxes have ended smoking.

This Is America?

I'm Sorry we are all going through this. I too have been unemployed scince October 2008. I was a retail manager for a company for 8 years, and worked very hard for a company that filed for bankruptcy protection. The courts protect the business, but not the employees, we recieved no severance pay, and the cobra benefits are so expensive! If the senate dosn't pass the extension I won't be able to pay my basic bills. I cry everyday! I am 50 years old and never have been on unemployment either have worked in retail for 32 years. I send out 15 resumes a week. I went for job training for medical billing, noone will give you an interveiw unless you have experience.

Unemployment counselors are no help at all, If you ask a basic question you get 3 diffrent answers. I can't believe this is happening in America.

Soda Tax

I agree that it won't end obesity, just like it hasn't ended "MY" smoking. However, I hope they pass it and triple it because I don't drink soda, but I'm sure all of those non-smokers do. A little goose for the gander that I've been speaking about when I complained about the outragious tobacco tax. Pretty soon you may have to report what you weigh and get charged a percentage based on how overweight you are. I hope they do that too. Why not, they're going to tax us to death no matter what you say!
