Republican Stimulus Showdown

January 30, 2009 05:02 PM ET |

The very happy news that every single Republican stood up to the Obama madness sweeping the nation put a smile on my face and restored my faith in the Republican Party ["GOP Opposition to Democrats' Stimulus: Brilliant or Suicidal?," usnews.com]. Our great nation's economy will get back on track when government gets out of the way. Most mornings these days I wake up and wonder, what country I am living in: a country that nationalizes banks? Please. Since when can government run anything well? Today at least we got a minute to pause, think, and say look, the Obama way is not the only way forward. The GOP needs to keep the ball rolling by continuing to suggest solutions that do not involve spending a trillion dollars of our hard earned money. I am amazed that anyone thinks this is a good idea.

Professional sports are about overpaid, arrogant, steroid specimens with bad manners seducing couch potatoes into obesity and heart disease. Sports should be about exercise, teamwork, and fair play. Turn off the TV.

PETA Super Bowl Ad Controversy

January 29, 2009 06:15 PM ET |

After watching this ad a few times, I am convinced that the NBC execs who deemed this inappropriate were reading way too much into it based on the stated objections ["Hot PETA Ad Banned From Super Bowl: Sex Doesn't Sell," usnews.com]. I don't agree with much of what PETA does, but this ad seems perfectly appropriate considering its intended audience. And for those who might be concerned about their children's brains being corrupted by this Super Bowl ad, perhaps your children shouldn't be watching the Super Bowl at all. You wouldn't want them to get the idea that a guy can get hot bikini-clad women by drinking domestic beer!

Americans don't want socialism, they want freedom. They want a leader who represents conservative values. Obamamania will have run its course by 2012.

Stimulus Package Predicament

January 28, 2009 03:28 PM ET |

We oppose it [Obama's stimulus plan] because most of the bill is payoff money to Democratic constituencies: hundreds of millions for Planned Parenthood, more AIDS education, money for ACORN, countless studies, etc. ["10 Reasons to Whack Obama's Stimulus Plan," usnews.com]. Very little actually goes to the economy. The absolute best stimulus would be to eliminate the corporate income tax. The second best would be to give all Americans a tax holiday equal to the dollar amount of the "stimulus" pork bill.

Comment by Eric of AR

If you do away with all the taxes, you would still come up short in equaling the loss of 13 trillion dollars. What makes sense (which Republicans don't have) is to make investments. As they say, "Jesus saves, but Moses invests."

Contrary to people thinking Obama doesn't have a clue, it's scary to actually realize that he has a clue and the first seven days of his administration should put the GOP on alert.

More inane rhetoric from [Rush] Limbaugh. The conservative dominated GOP had a long run in Washington and they failed to deliver.

Retirement Benefits Back and Forth

January 27, 2009 04:04 PM ET |

I do not support a federal program that will mandate business owners to pay for and administer an automatic workplace pension ["5 Ways President Obama Plans to Change Your Retirement," usnews.com]. I am a small business owner in rural southeastern Georgia that employs 100, and only 20 participate in a 401(k) plan we have provided for the past 15 years. It has gotten to be cost prohibitive for our company to offer this benefit and we have had to discontinue it during these difficult economic times. I hope the new president will not mandate small business owners to provide workplace pensions that come with costs to the business to administer. Will the government pay for all the costs to provide such a benefit?

Comment by S. Johnson of GA

All five of the proposals sound good to me—especially "allowing the federal government to negotiate lower drug prices for Medicare recipients." We dropped our AARP membership when they did not support federal negotiations. Everyone said that it was to support a "free market," but how free is the market for the elderly who try to negotiate that labyrinth mess? Having our elected representatives represent the citizens is not socialism; but what we have now is a dictatorship by a corporate oligarchy.

Teaching Evolution vs. Creationism

January 26, 2009 05:23 PM ET |

Our kids would be very poorly educated if they were taught that evolution was a finished product with no legitimate challenges or weaknesses ["On the Fight Between Evolution and Creationism in Texas Classrooms," usnews.com]. Nothing is evolving faster than evolutionary theory, and pretending that it is some immutable body of facts is absurd. Evolution needs to be taught, but not selectively. Public schools have no right to promote some facts and suppress others simply because of a personal philosophical or religious preference. To do that is simply to replace one religion with someone else's. I prefer not to have anyone's religious ideas taught as a science. That's a teaching best left to families. It is unconscionable for the state to mandate ignorance. That is what the Board of Education does by withholding pertinent facts, such as the failure of evolution to account for the origin of life. Let the theists teach their kids about theism. Let the atheists teach their kids about atheism. But please don't ask the schools to teach either one.

Maybe, at the very least, his [President Obama's] speechwriter should leave out the Bush bashing ... you did not see Bush take office and constantly talk about what he inherited.
