PETA Super Bowl Ad Controversy

January 29, 2009 06:15 PM ET | Permanent Link | Print

After watching this ad a few times, I am convinced that the NBC execs who deemed this inappropriate were reading way too much into it based on the stated objections ["Hot PETA Ad Banned From Super Bowl: Sex Doesn't Sell," usnews.com]. I don't agree with much of what PETA does, but this ad seems perfectly appropriate considering its intended audience. And for those who might be concerned about their children's brains being corrupted by this Super Bowl ad, perhaps your children shouldn't be watching the Super Bowl at all. You wouldn't want them to get the idea that a guy can get hot bikini-clad women by drinking domestic beer!

Well, at least PETA is getting their money's worth out of the commercial. I would have ignored it on TV, but with all the buzz, I had to look it up online. Did the commercial inspire me to eat more veggies? Not at all. It just seems like a sex commercial that I would blush to see in front of my grandmother.

Am I mistaken or is PETA still a nonprofit organization? If so, how did they pay and/or justify paying for a Super Bowl commercial in the first place. Don't they have more suitable ways to use donations?

There are a lot of "inappropriate" ads that definitely should not be aired on shows where our children will be watching. This is certainly one of them. If PETA feels they must promote vegetarianism to adults (with better sex as the hook), find another venue where our children aren't the collateral damage.

I say, good job NBC! There is way too much of this stuff on TV. It's about time the networks started taking a stand and drawing the line. Although there is a lot of violence and sex already on television, it's good that one network has the courage to actually stand up and say enough. Maybe NBC could extend the same boundaries to other shows in terms of violence and sex. There used to be television shows and commercials that were on the air for their wit and humor. PETA's use of sex in their commercials is a cheap and easy way to sell, but it shows a complete lack of creativity and intelligence.
