Rick Warren Blurs Party Lines
President-elect Obama made an excellent choice in selecting Rick Warren to give the invocation for his inaugural. By doing so, Obama is reaching out to evangelicals such as myself who actually wanted Mike Huckabee to be president ["Left's Reaction to Rick Warren Helps President-Elect Obama on the Right," usnews.com]. He is demonstrating that he is a man of courage and not afraid to make difficult decisions, even when his liberal colleagues rank against him. Atheists and ultra-left-wingers may not want prayers, but this country was founded upon and continues to be strong because of prayer.

Reverend Warren is a curious choice, and many find it offensive. I certainly understand the disappointment from the gay community. However, many do not know that the Reverend Lowery will also have an important role in the inauguration. Reverend Lowery is pro civil rights and is a friend to the gay community. So, at the very worst, Obama's decision regarding Warren is just a lapse in good judgment. This is not a betrayal of his campaign promise to bring equal rights for gays.

It is sad that so many Christians are still in an "us against them" mentality. Yes, Jesus is my lord and savior, but because of that, I am required to share his love for humanity—even with those who do not recognize his lordship. The longer the religious right continues down this path of demonizing the left, they will continue to be less and less aligned with the gospel of Christ. You cannot study the life of Jesus and then deny the fact that he adored people who were not devout Jews (as he was) and the only times he ever showed frustration and even anger were for those who believed they were righteous members of Judaism. Rick Warren is a good man, who I believe is wrong in his discrimination of gay people and wrong about how we reduce the number of abortions in this country, but Obama's pick of him for the invocation simply shows that Obama loves people that he doesn't necessarily agree with. This is what a Christian is called to do. Good for Obama, good for Christians, good for America, good for the world.

Can't We All Just Get Along?
Rick Warren is a good guy who is being unfairly persecuted. I don't understand why the gay community preaches inclusion and tolerance, but throws temper tantrums every time things do not go their way. I can appreciate that the gay community's concern, but other people do have opinions of their own. If we do not agree with you, just let it be. It doesn't me that we are homophobic or even that we don't like the LGTB community. To the contrary, our Christian beliefs demand that we love everyone. Why is it that we cannot disagree on this issue, but still live together harmoniously?
