Debating Bush

August 20, 2008 02:07 PM ET | Permanent Link | Print

"Bush Finds the Pool of Goodwill Has Gone Dry" [July 21-28] cites Bush's stubbornness on the Iraq war as a fault, along with his taking only limited measures in dealing with the downturn in the economy.

The president's stubbornness on Iraq is exactly why we are winning there today. With regard to the economy, the president assessed that situation properly in his off-the-record remarks last week that "Wall Street got drunk." That is exactly what happened, and there was no regulatory or congressional attempt to stop the excess. The capitalistic market economy we live by in this country will correct those excesses in due course. Bush has never given me the impression that he sticks his finger in the air like President Clinton to see which way to govern.

"Bush Finds the Pool of Goodwill Has Gone Dry" stated: "So far, there has been no second-term jinx for George W. Bush—no debilitating scandal...." What planet has the writer been on? We have never had a presidency with so many scandals.
