New Orleans Revisited

July 28, 2008 01:36 PM ET | Permanent Link | Print

How can you devote a three-page update on rebuilding New Orleans without figures on the billions of dollars taxpayers have been forced to pay for this ["The Road Back Home," June 23-30]?

It is a waste of American resources to rebuild an area that is mostly below sea level, is sinking while oceans are rising, and is subject to periodic floods and hurricanes. In the same issue, "Attacking the Deficit" reminds us of our rapidly increasing national debt of $31,000 per capita. It might be of interest to know how much of [one cause of that debt] will be permanently washed away in the next monster storm.

Pontchartrain Park is not a ghost town. Approximately 35 to 40 percent of former residents are back home, and more are in the process of rebuilding. A neighborhood school, university, several churches, a theological college, a playground, the baseball park, and bus transportation are up and running. Our neighborhood organization, Pontilly, has worked tirelessly since October 2005 to help our residents.

New Orleans Revisited

You have some nerve Mr. Allen Hyde Newland to say it is a waste of American resources to rebuild New Orleans. Your ignorance is mind boggling. New Orleans was rebuilt by the residents, civic organizations and volunteers who lack your heartless and arrogant mentality. We do more than our fair share for the country. We produce and distribute 30 % of the oil to the nation. We are the leading seafood provider. It would take forever to elaborate on our cultural contributions. There are thirty eight states susceptible to natural disasters. Based on your viewpoints our country’s leaders should start planning on taking over Canada. The disaster you are referring to was not a monster storm but a man made disaster courtesy of the army corps of engineers. This is another fact you failed to grasp an understanding of. If the majority of Americans during World War II had the mentality you have Mr. Hyde we would be ruled by Nazis.
