Newt Gingrich is Wrong--Sotomayor's No Racist, She's Sam Alito of the Left

I disagree with Newt Gingrich.

Judge Sonia Sotomayor's expressed belief that as a Latina who grew up in the public housing projects of New York City, she hopes she makes wiser judgments that the average white guy on the federal bench is far from a disqualifying factor—it is pretty much the best thing she has going for her.

Take away the South Bronx and what do you get: a studious Catholic baby boomer who enlisted in the meritocracy, graduated from prestigious Ivy League schools (Princeton, Yale Law) and served as a federal judge, showing considerable competence, and zero signs of legal artistry or intellectual genius.

Sounds like Sam Alito to me.

Indeed, I fear that the next 80 days will be a dreary re-run of the Alito hearings, but with Republicans and Democrats swapping roles. We will hear the familiar clichés, the tired rhetoric, the sarcastic questions, the divisive pandering to the base.

Just one more twilight struggle of the Culture Wars.

How mundane. How undeserving of a great nation, and a great Constitution. What little audacity.

When is "Settled" Law Really "Settled"

I would love a Supreme Court Nominee, when asked if Roe vs Wade is "settled" law to state: Senator do you honestly believe any law is settled with the changes you see in human thought and understanding? Because if you believed that all law, once decided by the court is "settled", that is equal to saying you believe "seperate, but equal" was settled law and the Court was wrong in its' ruling to change "settled" law. Remember that decision had been on the books for 60 years.

I would love to see how many of the guys would have heart attacks as they dive for the door or under the desk.

Wouldn't You Have To Read Her Opinions To Know Who & What She is?

Sotomayor's is a good reflection of everything else Obama's done to date: Center-to-right.

On 3 judge panels, she's voted with the Republicans 95% of the time.

She's sided against minorities 80% of the time.

She's the Republicans' dream.

If she can be compared to any of the sitting justices, it would be Scalia and Thomas. She appears to be as aggressive in questioning as Scalia, and bends over backwards to avoid being identified with affirmative action like Thomas.

Democrats won the election, and liberals in particular made it happen for Obama. Where is ours? Sotomayor isn't it.

Why does there have to be a "culture" war? Are there not more important issues to worry about than having some self appointed group or individual establishing rules for others to live by?

As President Washington intimated that if it does not pick my pocket or injure me why sould I care how someone else lives or worships?

Get a life Mr. Warren.
