EITC IS WELFARE

That's reality - EITC IS WELFARE.

It is a Government check from Uncle Sam to someone who doesnt make much money. And the fact is that EITC does disincentivize work, at least work that is reportable income.

You shouldn't be on Newt's case for calling a spade a spade. Obama's 'tax cuts' are simply Government checks given to people via the IRS. If its paid through USDA (food stamps) its welfare, but if its paid through the IRS (tuition subsidies) its not?!? Give us all a break.

Here's the reality to consider - whatever you call this payments from the govt to non-income-tax payers - WHAT IS THE IMPACT ON THE ECONOMY:

"These [Obama] tax credits will do little or nothing to promote economic growth because they do not reduce marginal tax rates--the rate on the next dollar of income--to provide powerful, meaningful incentives for productive activities such as investment, entrepreneurship and work. A tax credit is effectively a cash grant that can only affect incentives up to the amount of the grant. Indeed, such tax credits would likely reduce economic growth because the credits are phased out as income rises, and so effectively impose higher marginal tax rates over those income levels."

Newt's tax plans btw would get America back to work a lot more effectively than any economic stimulus plan because it encourages the middle class to work and KEEP more of their earnings.

Mia

The people who whine and moan about tax credits being welfare conveniently ignore companies who are allowed to shirk their duties as responsible corporations by shipping jobs overseas to avoid taxes and to follow safety rules or treat workers with dignity. Corporate welfare and the Bush administration's lackadaisical regulations costs us more money each year than giving tax credits to people who need food on their table. If people had jobs, there wouldn't be a need for social programs. So fix the problem where it starts. Hold corporations accountable and make them pay their fair share in taxes.

I hope the GOP and their supporters roam the wilderness for years until they figure out that helping people is more than preaching from a pulpit about Guns, Gays, and God.

GOP

The GOP is purging all the intellectuals from their party. They hate smart people. I really don't think the country should be looking to the GOP for the model of intellectualism.

One person's perspective

You all....well, about all of you, are forgetting that this article/column is one person's opinion. A person who plays "gotcha," using as fact, still that writer's perspective, does not mean he is correct in his summation. John Farrell has, frankly, with his "gotcha" an adolescent's approach. That puts me off right away. Besides, money received that is not money that has been earned is....you got it! Welfare!

TAX CUTS

I wonder why so many short-sighted people are so afraid that someone other than themselves might get a tax cut. The only way that taxes can ever really be cut is after the SIZE OF GOVERNMENT has been CUT. Is that so difficult to understand?

Newt Gingrich?

Who listens to him? His own party couldn't get rid of him fast enough. What a bunch of hypocrits. Now, all of a sudden he is speaking for the Republican Party? I would rather see "welfare" money go to the poor than see Gingrich's plan which would be "corporate welfare." The Republicans had eight years to do something, eight years to change Bush's huge mistakes, eight years watching Bush goof up time after time. Eight years of watching billions of dollars go down the drain, eight years of working with and supporting Phil "Foreclosure" Gramm's deregulation act. Now, all of a sudden they are the know it alls. Go back to sleep and keep your critisism to yourself. When they should have said something they stood like a bunch of dumb-dumbs with their finger up their ear. You had your chance and goofed it up. Too late now.

GOP welfare dupe

I am always amused by how simple the politiicians think we are. As long as the tax breaks and credits go to the wealthy, corporations,or for military agression, the GOP always approves.

Any mention of tax breaks, credits, or (heaven forbid) health care assistance for those who work hard (for little money) and create profits for the rich, and all "heck" breaks loose.

We are the only industrialized nation, that views the "care of it's citizens" as something bad. Most countries understand that taking care of your workforce is important.

Outsourcing jobs is welfare for corporations. Removal of capital gains tax is welfare for the wealthy. The GOP is always in favor of tax cuts for the rich, but hate the little people who create those riches for them.

The racist implication that Obama, as our first black president, must be in favor of welfare for the masses, is beneath even the GOP's ugly agenda.

Earned and not earned

Are liberals that stupid? You earn credit by paying taxes, if you don't pay any taxes how can you earn a tax credit? Therefore it is correctly defined as welfare- you are simply giving a check for no other reason then to buy votes.

So who’s going to pay for that John? Too bad we can't tax stupid.

tax welfare

John's article is just one more reason that I don"t care thet US News and World Report is no longer going to be in print

Newt Gingrich & The Wefare Queens

Good 'ol Newt; just your standard Republican disciple of expediency & opportunism. He suggests reversing a policy established & brought to fruition by Republican demigod Ronald Reagan. With no other straw man to fight, Newt expediently turns what was once a Republican article of faith into an Obama welfare giveaway.

Ronald Reagan invented the opportunistc Republican policy that served them well for a quarter-century. At root it had these characteristics: a) Pander to private greed with tax cuts, b) Ignore fiscal responsibility by increasing spending, particularly on, "defense," c) Justify the latter by creating enemies, foreign & domestic & engaging in foreign wars & adventures, d) Borrow from whatever source to pay the bills.

This policy served Republican interests well, but did not serve the American people. Today's massive Federal & private debt in the face of economic meltdown is the proof of the pudding.

Newt was noticeably silent about another "tax credit,' John McCain's $5000 tax credit for everyone to buy their own health insurance. That one would have also gone to the ostensible 40% of Americans who pay no tax, and every other income tax payer as well. It had the Republican advantage of guaranteeing that everyone had to buy private insurance to gain the benefit, a kind of corporate welfare in the same class as Medicare Part "D," a far greater benefit to the insurance industry than to the seniors it benefits, or the American taxpayer.

Republicans have never learned, and probably never will, that when 2/3 of your economy is based on consumption it is the people at the bottom who consume, not those who skim fortunes by manipulating money at the top.
