Quote of the Week: Binyamin Netanyahu at the U.N.
By Dan Gilgoff, God & Country
"Yesterday, the man who calls the Holocaust a lie spoke from this podium. To those who refused to come and to those who left in protest, I commend you. You stood up for moral clarity, and you brought honor to your countries. But to those who gave this Holocaust denier a hearing, I say on behalf of my people, the Jewish people, and decent people everywhere, have you no shame? Have you no decency?"
—Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, speaking yesterday to the United Nations General Assembly about Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

United Nations means all nations...not just the ones we like this year
I understanding everything Netanyahu said, but it is the United Nations. By definition this is the only forum where everyone can speak. Denying anyone a chance to speak would be nonsense. However, it is the right of others to not listen. So its fine if people left that didn't want to hear a specific message. My thoughts.
Muser cites Holocaust denial law
Muser surprised me by saying some nations have laws that make it a crime to deny the Holocaust (Third Reich crimes) existed. How can that be, when freedom of speech seems to trump the idea? I've wondered why anyone would want to believe those horrible crimes didn't happen. How could disbelief help anybody? Maybe a person had relatives who were SS or Nazis or people who committed atrocities? Could deniers be trying to "restore honor to Germany?" The Iranian president is obviously mistaken when he makes the denial but he continues to behave as if he believes what he says. I suppose it's all because of Middle East oil and other mineral deposits. I find it useful that an Israeli is asking all nations to speed development of other sources of energy.
We need a big tax credit for people who invest in solar, wind and tide power.
Netanyahu is right
Tell me, folks. What do you suppose would happen if the USA simply arrested ole Mahmoud (while he's in New York) on behalf of the world---on charges of breaking Holocaust denial laws that exist in other countries, and on charges of lying to the world about nuclear programs?
Do you think the sky would fall if we said to Iran, "You'll have to elect another president, because this buffoon ain't going home to you anytime soon"?
Unconventional. Yeah, I know. But what do you suppose would happen? Iran launching a war over that nut? Nah.
