Another Catholic?
The carefully crafted WH statement quoted near the top of the story,
"Judge Sotomayor was raised as a Catholic and attends church for family celebrations and other important events"
notably downplays whether the judge is in fact currently a self-proclaimed, actively practicing or believing Catholic. Yet the rest of the column blithely proceeds on the assumption that she is.
In any case, 6, or even 5, Catholics on the Supreme Court is way out of whack with proportional representation in the population, if that's the theory we're operating on now for appointing Justices. Let's get an atheist on the Court, since we're a minority that is de facto barred from election to high office in this country where we supposedly value freedom of belief -- including the freedom to *not* believe -- and the Court is frequently the final arbiter on issues of church and state.
You Make My Point
To the poster who made the ridiculous assertion that pro-choice Americans would condone the murder of a four year old, ala Cayley Anthony, you can also look at it this way. Think of the awful fate that child suffered at the hand of a monster. How much easier it would have been for her to have missed being born at all. People who rant on about babies the size of a pinhead, yet pour out venom and hatred on any who disagree with their point of view are the Religious Nazis of America. There is no reasoning, no balancing their view, no acceptance on their part of any opinion but their own. In the end, the majority will rule on this issue. good luck trying to change hearts and minds by heaping guilt and hatred.
Unwanted pregnancies
How quick we are to assume that pregnancy is a result of mindless pursuit of pleasure, for which the remedy is, Just Say No. More often than we would like to admit, the woman or girl has no choice in the matter—saying "no" is not an option. For starters, what if the male in the matter is a father, stepfather, mom's boyfriend, older brother, step brother, "funny uncle," teacher or coach? Then there are the myriad forms of pressure that can interfere with free choice: a boss, employer, or boyfriend saying "If you love me" etc.
And then there are the cultures with arranged marriages, and where women are regarded as having a marital duty to satisfy their husbands. Or where sleeping with a virgin is thought to be a cure for AIDS. The list goes on, becoming more sordid by the minute.
To assume that women normally or always have a choice is the matter is delusional. Only a male-majority church hierarchy, ministry, legislature and judiciary could persist in this fancy. Does anyone truly doubt that if it were men who became pregnant, abortion rights would be so fiercely resisted?
Sotomayor
Republican Catholics are just a bunch of sore losers trying to find fault with everything Obama does...they blow everything out of proportion and twist the media opinions to sway readers into believing in their manipulative ways....I'm truly ashamed of these so called "Christians"!!! President Obama is more Christian than all of these Catholics combined and so is Sotomayor....come on people...wake-up!!!
Obama Era
I think we have to accept that the Obama era is one we will have to put up with. I just hope there are enough people with the courage and intelligence required to do what they can to stop his destructive agenda. Unfortunaterly, the Supreme Court is free to do more damage to society in general than any other branch of our government because the judges are not elected, nor responsible to anyone. Imagine!! And we know Ms. Sotomayor is going to legislate from the bench. She as much as said so in a sound bite from a meeting with her colleagues. However, there is no way to be sure what she will do. These are rough times we're going through right now, and many people are suffering economically, but hang in there. Everything passes eventually and this too will pass. Perhaps we will learn some hard, but necessary lessons in time for the next election cycle.
Sotomayor on Abortion
She describes opponents of abortion on demand as "antiabortion." Fair enough, but she tips her hand when she doesn't use the corollary, "proabortion," when describing supporters of abortion on demand and instead opts for the euphemistic "pro-choice" moniker.
Oh, please
Oh, please.
One cannot advance within the Democratic Party without being a card carrying member of NARAL.
The notion that Obama would nominate someone who will not uphold abortion - the sacrament of the Democratic Party - is ludicrous.
This article is nothing more than the in-the-tank-for-Obama media trying to garner support for Sotomayor by pretending her views on abortion are unknown.
