Catholic Bishop Sits Out Michael Steele's Right to Life Dinner Appearance

It's become so commonplace for U.S. Roman Catholic bishops to publicly attack Democratic politicians (think Barack Obama, Kathleen Sebelius, John Kerry) that I was struck by this newscast last night from Evansville, Ind., about the local bishop boycotting Michael Steele's speech at a big fundraising dinner for the group Vanderburgh County Right to Life. Bishop Gerard Gettelfinger skipped Steele's speech because of the RNC chair's remarks on abortion in a recent GQ interview, which some interpreted as supportive of abortion rights. The news report is from Evansville's Fox affiliate:

Perhaps they should have called their real Republican Schill - Bill Donohue... He would be only too happy to expose his need for personal gain at the expese of our Church.

Michael Steele unfortunately represents many Republicans whom I refer to as "Catholics of Convenience". Every two years (election cycle)years they take a quick turn to the right, and focus on an issue for political purposes only. I again will state that that kind of use of our Church is more harmful than any other scnadal we have had to endure.
