Antiabortion Sam Brownback Sounds Bullish on Pro-Abortion-Rights Kathleen Sebelius
By Dan Gilgoff, God & Country
The Brody File notes that adamantly antiabortion Sen. Sam Brownback has released a supportive statement about Health and Human Services Secretary-designate Kathleen Sebelius, a fellow Kansan. Brody wonders whether it gives Sebelius cover as antiabortion groups attack her pro-abortion-rightschoice record. A few excerpts from the statement, which Brownback released jointly with fellow Kansas Sen. Pat Roberts, also Republican:
"Congratulations to Governor Sebelius on being nominated to be the Secretary of Health and Human Services," the Senators said. "It's an honor for the State of Kansas to have an elected official appointed to the president's cabinet. We are hopeful Governor Sebelius will be a voice for Kansas and rural America at the Department. We look forward to working with her on issues important to the state including a National Cancer Institute Designation at the University of Kansas Cancer Center."
"We will be able to pick up the phone and talk directly with the secretary about issues that are important to Kansas. We know we can have a strong dialogue with Governor Sebelius on issues we've been working on including fighting Medicare reimbursement cuts to home health care providers and ensuring the hundreds of billions of health care dollars in the stimulus are wisely spent.
"Obviously we will have different viewpoints than the Administration on many issues including health care reform especially given the huge price tag. We have real concerns about the president's budget which includes an additional $634 billion for a health care 'reserve fund' which is made up of tax increases and major cuts to programs critical to Kansas seniors. We look forward to talking with Governor Sebelius about the details of the president's plan."
Silence on abortion. Doesn't seem as if Brownback's exactly gearing up for a nomination battle.

Brownback
Since being in the pro-life movement since before the
Supreme Ct. Outlandish Ruling, I've learned one thing
that all should remember. When you have an outstanding
spokesman like brownback, you must give him benefit of
the doubt. Because he welcomed her, means he door is
open for discussion, education, graphic facts. YOU Don't
CLOSE the door to possible progress one to one. This
has been proven time & time again throughout the years.
Look at Dr. Nathansan. Stop the amateur assumptions and
stick with you letters, e-mails etc. to the Senate,Congress
regarding not only her nomination but also the Planned
parenthood millions to put their school agenda in and
such. Stay focused and don't allow yourselves to get
sidetracked.
Brownback
Brownback got the most recent pro-life bill through Congress, the pre-natal bill. Holy crap pro-lifers eat their own right quick.
If she wins Brownback's open senate seat, which she would according to polls, she gives the Dems a 60 vote majority, and then the Repubs couldn't do a thing to stop pro-choice bills.
Maybe you guys can't see the forest for the fetuses.
The past vs. the future
Mary, give me a break, Senator Brownback has been out front on abortion for as long as he has been in congress. He regularly sponsors life legislation and his commitment to the cause of life is just unquestionable.
I agree with you that the movement has to look to the future, but you can't just ignore that Brownback has been a leader in the Senate on life.
And again, no one is looking at this through the prism of what it means for the Senate. There is no question that Kathleen will do less damage the rights of the unborn at HHS than in the Senate. The pro life movement benefits from this, its as simple as that.
