Pope - AIDS - Africa - I know the issue is old but I was surfing & wanted to share thoughts...

A growing mound of evidence is proving that the Pope is right when it comes to the ineffectiveness of condoms and the effectiveness of abstinence in the global war on AIDS. Among African nations, Botswana, Cameroon, and Kenya, which all have aggressive condom distribution programs, watched HIV prevalence increase alongside condom distribution. In Botswana today, where abstinence still takes a back seat to condom promotion, 1 in 6 people are living with HIV/AIDS.

Conversely, in predominantly Catholic Uganda, condoms did not enter the scene until 1995, and are promoted as a last resort, while abstinence initiatives are well funded and take center stage. When compared with other African nations, Uganda has been wildly successful. “Uganda has performed well in bringing down the HIV prevalence to around 6%. In many parts of the country, it was at least three times as high during the early 1990s” (BBC News 4/12/05). While this can be attributed to several factors, the success of abstinence promotion over condom promotion is difficult to deny. Despite these facts, Urban Jonsson, UNICEF's regional director for eastern and southern Africa advocated for an end to all intelligent debate over the condom issue when he addressed the UNICEF Board of Directors in 2003, "Let us stop the almost metaphysical debate on the pros and cons of the use of condoms. . . . Let us follow the decision of the government of Botswana to make condoms available and accessible for everybody, everywhere and at all times…” (www.nationalreview.com).

Another illustration of the safe sex movement’s willful blindness to the effectiveness of abstinence promotion/ineffectiveness of condoms can be seen in Asia. The Philippines and Thailand both experienced an outbreak of AIDS in 1984. The Philippines, an overwhelmingly Catholic nation, took the Church’s lead in promoting abstinence. Thailand was flooded with condoms. Over 20 years later the rate of AIDS in Thailand is fifty times that of the Philippines, even though a modest decrease in new infections attributed to a recent condom campaign has caused “safe sex-perts” to promote Thailand as a shining example in the global war on AIDS. The success of the Philippines is consistently overlooked.

An 85% risk reduction simply isn't effective when fighting a pandemic. The facts back Benedict XVI.

And whose dogma is more important than the lives of Africans? Hmmm....
