It won't be prosecuted

It's a misdemeanor, and PAs, especially in financially struggling rural Oregon, won't bother to prosecute. They don't have the money.

if you really want to stop starvation and puntilla-knife-killed horses, then legislate humane transportation and reopen slaughter plants. Otherwise you'll have more cases - like the one in Gem County, Idaho - of horses dumped, shot and the brands cut off.

If you want to know what's really going on, contact a brand inspector in any rural western area.

The pot calling the kettle black

"Pope Benedict's statement upon arriving in Cameroon was,

"AIDS cannot be overcome by the distribution of condoms."

This is one of the most horrifically ignorant statements made by a world leader..."

This is one of the most horrifically ignorant statements ever made by a journalist.

What the Pope says is 100% true. One needs to be blind (morally and spiritually) not to see the profound truth in his statement. The Pope is advocating the use of education and moral formation to put an end to AIDS...and, in fact, this is the only feasible solution to this epidemic. Condom distribution does not stop AIDS, and it certainly does not stop rape, the violation of women, treating women like objects, etc. How could a condom possibly put a stop to all such things?

We have arrived at a moment in history when only the voice of the Pope and of the Catholic Church is plausible.

How wonderful for Oregon! This is a HUGE step forward!

Hurse Slaughter

I feel it shuld be a law that horses can not be shipped to Canada or Mexico. If you are a respomsible horse owner you need to treat themthe same as any other pet. We all have some hard times and people just need to ask for help. It would help if euthanization and disposable of the body in cases of real old or sick horses. I don't think being butchered alive is the answer and we all know it is not done humanely.

Not so simple

I agree there is never and excuse for abandoning and animal for which one is responsible.

But...

You oversimplify the problem of what to do with a horse when one suffers some sort of financial setback. There are more horses than homes, euthanasia is not free, and the disposal of the body is a problem in many areas of the country. In a zeal to protect the horses from being eaten, Congress doomed many of those same horses to starvation or neglect. I think most would agree that starvation is the greater of two evils.

horse abandonment

Between 12 and 19 horses starved to death this year at Canim Lake, B.C. out of a herd of 90. Others will probably die because of their sorry condition. Last year at this time, 30 arabian horses starved to death at Andrew, Alberta. One hundred head of emaciated arabs were rescued and successfully adopted out by Susan Fife of Ardrossan Stables outside of Edmonton. The horses were owned by Axel Hinz-Schleuter and Dale Huber.

According to pro slaughter people all we have to do is build a few more slaughter houses and there will be no more abandoned and neglected horses. Right???? WRONG.

CANADA HAS 7 SLAUGHTER HOUSES BUTCHERING HORSES FOR RICH EUROPEANS.

Horse prices have been going down for the last 5 years. Everyone kept breeding. Cattlemen are going broke and cutting back. Pig factories on the prairies were sealing barns last year and gasing thousands of little pigs because there was no market for them and they could not make money by feeding them. Dairy farmers are going broke and some only breaking even. One of the largest poultry producers in the U.S. recently declared bankrupcy.

More slaughter houses will not cure the problem. Common sense would go a long way.

Thank You Oregon!

Well said D. Masters!

Personal responsibility for the animals, children and elderly in this country has been appalling for many years now. It is sad we have to have laws to make people want to do the right thing, in a perfect world we wouldn't, but this world is far from perfect!

I applaud the MEC tracks that now have a zero tollerance, I applaud the Reps who are co-sponsoring HR503 and Oregon for their recent decision. I applaud all the people who work tirelessly day in and day out trying to make this world a better place, many with great self-sacrifice to their own personal lives!

Abandonment, abuse and neglect of any animal or person should never be ignored! I think most people do know that abusers of children, elderly and other easy prey usually begin their cycle of abuse with animals.

Horse slaughter is in that catagory as there is no humane way to use a captive bolt gun designed for a cow on a horse. Even pro-slaughter activists agree what happens to the horses in Mexico is some of the worst kind of cruelty and that double decker trucks are not safe for transporting equine.

Thank you Oregon for making a difference and doing the right thing!

Horse Abandonment

Alright Oregon!!

Hope you set a precedent all over this nation!

Oregon takes first steps to responsiblity.

Congrads to Oregon the Majority of Americans wanted a law to protect horses by making it a crime to abanned horses Kudos, and to thoses irreponsible and ignorant pro slaughter freaks like RL and Marlyn Manson Kille get a life or learn it behind bars next time to think about abanning a horse. Horse slaughter was secretly funded behind responsible horse owners back and should not exist. They operated illegal against texas laws and promoted abuse and neglect. They should never be allowed to step foot on American Soil. IF you want horse slaughter then get your big butt to france and get you a job in the plant. This is America and we dont support foreign profits and irresponsible people. And for thoses few elected officals that support horse slaughter plants your next to be kicked out of office for NOT doing your job.. Shame on you.....

Oregon Consciousness

Finally, a state that respects an animal that exhibits selflessness and unrequited love.

THANK YOU OREGON for exhibiting through your law the fact that horses should be cherished, not used as disposable ego or exercise machines.

When we do not respect an animal large enough to kill us with his strength, an animal that does NOT kill another animal to eat, that carries us or our products with the strength of their sensitive backs, we have to know we are blessed with the presence of very special beings on this earth. To disrespect them is to annul ourselves. We must protect them for all life to live in peace on this planet.

I join so many others to applaud Oregon and hope they set a nationwide and universal example for others to follow.
