Bush Farewell Speech? Ignore It

January 15, 2009 05:31 PM ET | Bonnie Erbe | Permanent Link | Print

By Bonnie Erbe, Thomas Jefferson Street blog.

When the nation is in the midst of the Bush-caused recession, the deepest economic downturn since the Great Depression, why do we have to listen to anything else that the person who perpetrated this disaster has to say? I say we don't! Tell the "historian in chief" to go fly a kite (everybody's got to be good at something, right?) and ignore him as he tries to persuade Americans that his tenure's not been as much of a disaster as we all know it to be. He's said in exit interviews with the media that history will have a kinder view of him than the American public does now:

President Bush becomes historian in chief tonight, in a farewell speech designed to frame his presidency as an era of accomplishment amid challenges, contesting his critics' more dour assessments of the "W" years that are reflected in sagging opinion polls.

To me, the most telling point is that Stepford Wife Laura Bush is flooded with agent requests to sell her memoir to publishers, but no one's really interested in what The Legacy has to say. Good riddance to bad rubbish!

I Dont Doubt It...

"I used to enjoy reading your column occasionally. I'm an open minded person who is predisposed to considering other points of view. Yes.

Yes, it obviously IS.

That's It

I used to enjoy reading your column occasionally. I'm an open minded person who is predisposed to considering other points of view. However, this absolutely SENSELESS massacre of a well-intentioned (if at times misguided) man who had the misfortune of dealing with FAR more than the average President is beyond me. Your own lack of thought and reflection has ensured that I will NEVER AGAIN read your column.

Dubya's Legacy

I think it's incredible that this guy has the guts to claim avoiding another 9/11 style attack as his greatest accoplishment. I mean, come on, if that counts, then all the preceding 42 presidents should be considered to be even better than Dubya. After all, they can claim to have avoided any 9/11 style attacks for more than 200 years. Then this guy comes along and claims as a great achievement the fact that during his presidency there was only one 9/11 attack. Maybe he couldn't have done anything to stop Bin Laden who was determined to strike in the US, but come on, stop bragging about the failure to protect the US on 9/11.
