John McCain's and Barack Obama's Billion-Dollar Election

November 03, 2008 11:55 AM ET | Bonnie Erbe | Permanent Link | Print

If nothing else is obscene about this presidential election (and plenty is IMHO), then the fact that together the candidates will be spending $8 per vote to win the White House clearly meets and exceeds the obscenity descriptor.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP)—Barack Obama and John McCain uncorked massive get-out-the-vote operations in more than a dozen battleground states Sunday, millions of telephone calls, mailings and door-knockings in a frenzied, fitting climax to a record-shattering $1 billion campaign. Together, they'll spend about $8 per presidential vote.

Think of it, a billion dollars! That money could have been used to buy up a lot of bad mortgages and keep thousands of Americans in their homes. It could have been used as a critical influx of liquidity for some small banks to bail them out of the credit crisis. It could have educated a lot of poor American children or provided healthcare for a considerable period for all Americans who are uninsured. Instead, it was used to fill the airwaves with the same unadulterated blather we've been subjected to for months now.

Sen. Barack Obama's campaign is so flush with cash, a close friend of mine went to work for him as a volunteer three weeks ago and my friend was offered a paid staff position less than two weeks before the election. This never happens so late in the campaign cycle, because most candidates are tapped out at that point.

Obama's half-hour paid advertisements on several TV networks this past week were more evidence he's raised too much money. If Obama meant what he said about spreading the wealth around, he should have started with his own campaign coffers and spread some of that wealth around rather than impose new tax burdens on Americans in the middle of a recession.

The ONLY thing going to the bank$ is our (TAXPAYER$') money, no matter who got elected--THANKS to Congress! [Their public approval rating is about half (17%) of Pres. Bush's!] Now they'll take even MORE!

This whole INVESTMENT / BANKING / INSURANCE FIASCO & COMING COLLAPSE is the result of BOTH PARTIES in the U.S. Congress, in 1998, along with then House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R) & Pres. W. J. Clinton (D) who signed into LAW the APPEAL OF THE "GLASS- STEAGAL AMENDMENT" of 1933. This was enacted during the LAST "GREAT DEPRESSION" due to the lending, banking & investing practices which led to the stock market crash back then! GO AHEAD, CHECK OUT THE FACTS!

Just remember, when the former SOVIET Union collapsed along their form of communist government. Communist China survives today because they claim NOT to be the "REVISIONIST DOGS" that they accused the U.S.S.R. of being. One of the central questions now is: "are western-style Capitalistic Democracies on the decline or near collapse"?! If so, what form will replace them?! Will anarchy, tyranny, dictatorship or some extreme synthesis of both Communism and Capitalism [i.e., Socialism] emerge?. The U.S. is being blamed around the world for starting / unleashing a Global Economic War. Our current President Bush is NO MORE responsible for this than was either President's H. Hoover or FDR during the early 19th century.

Since we are already involved in two wars--a military-style one on two fronts (The Global War On Terror) & an economic one (WALL STREET), perhaps the main question now is: "what LEADERSHIP will President-elect Obama demonstrate? Considering ALL the FACTS, and examining our history, it should be noted that the last time around, The U.S. had the Depression ("Great") BEFORE World War (WWII), NOT AFTER. It actually brought us out of the "Great Depression. Lastly, excluding Hawaii, that military conflict was NOT fought on our soil--911 changed all of that this time...

ALL THAT MONEY SPENT JUST TO WIN ELECTION($)!!!

Oh, I almost forgot to close in the spirit of bi-partisanship: "GOOD LUCK PRESIDENT-ELECT OH-MAMA"!!!

dm

ALL THAT MONEY SPENT JUST TO WIN ELECTION($)!!!

THE WHOLE THING MAKES SOME OF US SICK. WAKE -IT - UP EVERYONE! BETWEEN THE MONEY USED TO "BUY" THIS ELECTION, AND THE UNQUESTIONABLY PRO OBAMA MAIN-STREAM MEDIA BIAS FOR OBAMA, THE END RESULT WAS A NO-BRAINER. EVEN WORSE WILL BE AS THE RECESSION / DEPRESSION WORSENS & THERE'S NOT ENOUGH MONEY TO GO AROUND PERIOD--NOT JUST PERSONAL FINANCIAL WEALTH TO "REDISTRIBUTE"-- BUT TAX REVENUE RAISED TO SPEND ON GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS (THOSE NEEDED OR NOT); TO BAIL-OUT MORE BANKS & COMPANIES [NOT THAT WE EVEN SHOULD, ESPECIALLY FOR THOSE WHO USED POOR JUDGMENT, BAD BUSINESS PRACTICES OR JUST PLAIN DECEIVED PEOPLE]; OR RESCUE HOME-OWNERS [ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO MADE BAD OR FRAUDULENT DECISIONS].

MR. O-BAMA HAS MADE SO MANY PROMISES TO BECOME PRESIDENT, TO BE ALL THINGS TO ALL PEOPLE [LIKE A CHAMELEON--NOT A CHANGE-LING], THAT A LOT OF AMERICANS WILL BE VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH HIM--NOT JUST THOSE WHO VOTED FOR HIM!
