John McCain's Slide and the Financial Crisis: It's the Economy, Stupid

September 24, 2008 02:59 PM ET | Bonnie Erbe | Permanent Link | Print

Taking respectful issue with my colleague Michael Barone, I disagree with his theory posted earlier this week that Democrats may not benefit from Wall Street's meltdown.

Electoral-vote.com had Sen. John McCain ahead earlier this month in the Electoral College and, in fact, winning the Electoral College. Today, Sen. Barack Obama, who had led by a wide margin last month (over 300 electoral college votes) is back ahead of McCain in the Electoral College, 282-256.

Even the Republican-leaning RasmussenReports.com shows Obama back in the lead:

The Rasmussen Reports Balance of Power Calculator shows Obama leading in states with 193 Electoral College votes while McCain has the edge in states with 189 votes. When "leaners" are included, Obama leads 259-247 (see Quick Campaign Overview). A total of 270 Electoral Votes are needed to win the White House (see 50-State Summary).

What's changed since Sen. McCain fell out of the lead position? It's the economy, just the economy.

McCain or Obama, who will be a better candidate

Why would we vote for a man that is so out of touch with what is going on in the US today. McCain doesnt have a clue. He is not in touch with average Americans. The people who are struggling day to day to make ends meet. Those that are losing there one home that they have. What does he know about that, if he loses one he has about 6 more to go to. And Palin, she is a joke. Can she answer a question straight, or even with common sense? I would be afraid of the outcome of this Nation if they were at he helm. Barack knows the pains of the common people. He knows the struggles and challenges that we face. I'm proud that through his adversity he has made something wonderful of his life, and I'm confident that he and Joe Biden will take this country to the next level and bring about the positive change that we so desperately need.

We need to Hear the DEBATE

I am very concerned when a candidate cancel a debate!!!!! Why? All of a sudden you're needed in Washington when you haven't been there for months? To me, it sound as if you're afraid to debate. Let's get it on and hear what both candidates have to say. I'm concerned that if the debate is not a go, the American People will stay confused about the Palin/McCain campaign (Smile). Remember Sarah Palin saying the best choice is the Palin/McCain ticket; not the McCain/Palin ticket.

By the way, whose running for President on the Republican ticket McCain or Palin?

Get it together McCain........Learn how to multi-task and learn how to use a computer.

It's always the economy, stupid

Any Republican candidate would have had to try hard to turn the focus as far away from the way the Bush policies have bankrupted this country.

And John has tried.

But when the biggest contributors take the money and run and we the people are told we must bear the cost of the bail out again, the best strategy John could come up with on short notice was to cancel his much begged for debate as if that would accomplish anything.

Now, all that is left is last minute swift boat type attack ads.
