Nine Inch Nails' '100 Percent Free' Album
Pushing the edges of the new world of music marketing, Trent Reznor's Nine Inch Nails is offering a free download of its latest album, The Slip.
The move seems an even purer play than what Radiohead did with its most recent album, In Rainbows. The British group offered that record at any price fans were willing to pay, including nothing at all.
There's no guilt trip from NIN architect Reznor, who had already shown a willingness to toy with new marketing approaches. Giving away some tracks on the last NIN album apparently helped sell it in a variety of shapes and sizes.
And not to worry for disk fans, NIN says on its site. The new album will also be available this summer on CD and vinyl, and we're betting at a variety of prices again.

Good for him and us!
A finger in the eye of the of the record industry! I was hurt when I had to pay $17 for ride the lightning! Go home and cry Lars, your industry is falling apart!
Holland
Trent Reznor seems to visualize Internet as a form of expanding his fan base by making it available to people that can't buy his album for some reason, also as a form of promotion, like radio, TV, and printed media.
Record Labels Suck
In your face money eating, credit stealing, corporate bastards Record labels.
Labels are overrated
NIN is awesome
Music is changed now forever
Trent Reznor is NOT in it for the money,............... only for the music.
Trent is marvellous
Trent is awesome in every way and determined to give his fans the very best at no cost what so ever! he is soo imaginitive in his music and the way he treat the record market. Trent you rock!
Brilliant
If people aren't willing to buy music they like, they will get it for free. If you truly are a fan you will likely buy the album, go to the shows, buy a t-shirt, etc...This is just great, hopefully more bands will catch-on.
A musical revolution
I hope to see more moves such as this. It's all about cutting out the middle man so that the bands can get what they deserve. Trent has worked hard and put up with plenty of sh*t over the years. He deserves every fan he has. What a great way for Trent to say "thanks"!
A return to what it should be
Anyone who's seen Bill Hicks' Relentless show knows what exactly what I mean when I say that music used to be about the heart and the feeling of the artist. Record labels ruined all of that by turning an artform into a money-churning industry where anyone with good hair and nice teeth and chew out some rubbish lyrics and earn millions.
I think we can all agree that a bold move like this is a return to what music should be. Keep it up, Trent!
MY MONEY GOES TO THE ARTIST!
I see a least 20 live shows a year. I pay DEARLY for tickets, T-shirts, Band fan clubs and VIP packages on Band Sites. This is the ONLY money I pay for music. I trade mp3's with friends and download mixes. My money to the BAND>>>NO MIDDLE MAN!
Impressive move. The money is all in the tour anyway. Even though I still like to buy physical cds, but not for the stupid price they are at. A cd costs less than a dollar to make, why should I pay $15?
Next, I would like to see "simultaneous release" in the movie industry. I want the choice to see a movie the day it comes out, or watch it on PPV that day, or buy the DVD. Heck, some movies are so good, I would buy a copy of the DVD when I came out of the theatre.
