Education is a right according to what?

It is expensive to educate a person. The person being educated should have to pay for their own education because they get the most benefit from it.

The idea that it is a right is an odd one. According to who or what? You just can't pull rights out of thin air. That is not how our system works. I can't just think of something that makes me warm and fuzzy inside and arbitrarily declare it a right.

I have a ton of debt that I wish more than anything that I did not have, but it is my education and it is bizarre for me to think that someone else should pay my bills for me.

If you don't think education is worth the price, then you should not be formally educated. There are plenty of good jobs that do not require a college education, or you could do a pay as you go thing.

There would be horrible side effects if everyone was guaranteed a college education. It would be horribly expensive, the population would be over educated (there would be even more people with college degrees flipping burgers for a living), and our society would be much less productive overall (for several reasons including but not limited to the fact that people with college degrees will often prefer unemployment to certain types of work, people losing years of productivity to unnecessary schooling, as well as the fact that the tax hikes that would be necessary to pay for degrees that cannot be utilized will hurt business activity).

Not to mention, when the consumer is not concerned about costs, we will have problems with skyrocketing costs for education. That is guaranteed.

To clarify, I would say education is a right in a similar sense that guns are a right. You have a right to buy one, but it's not a right to have someone buy one for you.

Student Loans...who needs them.

Poster above me...(andre of OR) I'll bet you didn't pay a dime for school out of your own pocket and I completely disagree with your statement that education isn't a right. It is a right. Perhaps I should move to a different country for schooling. There are many Euro-Universities that offer free college and some even pay the students to attend. Stop reading books about what you think this government is about and wake up to reality.

Help paying loans

Right now, there is no help for me in repaying my loan. I have been unemployed since Feb '09 and due to an error in my paycheck at that time..I ended up owing the IRS last year, which I pay monthly (it's not their fault)..since my paycheck was direct deposited, I did not notice the taxes that were to be taken out. Call it stupid on my side. My husband and I had to file separatly because of what I owed. Now, I have been receiving unemployment ($222 per week) and my husbands hours have been cut. We still have a roof over our heads and are luckier than most or alot of people caught up in this cycle of crap. The govt gives loans to companies that misuse it (ex.AIG)..but I can't get any help..food stamps..what a joke..my husband makes $7 to much a year for us to qualify (it's true). My loans are through FASA and they are only letting me take 6 mth deferments (since I'm unemployed) and I can't take the full deferment because I don't work at least 30 hours per week (this is due to a new govt plan). I have a 2 year degree - I techinally have a 4 year degree, but due to the rising cost of paying for that degree, I have yet to obtain it. Right now it will cost me at least $500 in fees just to get the degree so I can get a better job..how funny is that? Getting a job? Heck, I couldn't even get a job at Wendy's (very true) from being overqualified..now the banks are screwing us..taking out debits prior to checks being deposited (this is happening to everyone I know..true) just so they can get their dog gone fees. Can't get ahead, tired of being screwed, can't stop it..this is why I need help, just like the rest of you. How can we try to get ahead? If you have the answer, let me know. I have been trying to find out myself. Although we try to ask for help, the govt isnt going to help. They just put us in a corner and say the hell with them.

RE Tina Marie of NY SINGLE MOTHER

In response to Tina Marie of NY :

I am a single mother of three. My husband was a police officer and was shot in the head in the line of duty. He stayed in the hospital for 8 months before dying. Every penny of our life savings, retirement and his life insurance was gone by the end of that year. I was a junior in college working full time in public service AND going to school and raising a family when he was killed. So before you pass judgment on the single mothers take a moment to understand that not ALL of us single mothers spread our legs to dead beats and/or strangers and are now looking for a handout. You know I bet you don't do anything to help your community. Maybe you should offer solutions instead of passing harsh judgments. Obviously people who have educational debts were trying to better themselves. Unfortunatly for my children and myself, when my husband died I was unable to continue with school as I now work 2 full time jobs. Certainly if the government can bailout these large corporations who acted irresponsibly in their spending, then why can't I get a break too? I work my tail off, my children are all honor students and I live paycheck to paycheck. We don't have a fancy house and/or expensive things. I have NO debt except my student loans. Yet I have to tell my children they can't play sports or go to summer camp or take music lessons. I can't even afford school pictures, yearbooks or field trips. Does this seem fair? Education should be free! If the number of educated people were higher than the number of non-educated people, society as a whole would benefit. More education = productive thinking = solutions that work. Why don't you use your spare time for solutions instead of passing judgment?
