Private loans

Heya Alan. I feel your pain. I'm in the process of applying to a school in Germany and although tuition is free I still need to cover my living expensives. Here are some lenders I fond that support study aboard. I haven't looked to far into but it's worth a look.

Loans which can be used for study abroad include:

* Campus One Private Student Loan Program

* Educated Borrower

* Education Finance Partners

* International Student Loan Program

* U.S. Bank

Hope this help! also please let me know if you find any info that could be useful as well.

cheers

Consider Tuition Free Universities & Colleges

Perhaps he should have looked at top schools (alot of them in Scandinavia) with free tuition policies (fingers crossed that the gov't won't mess up one of their best PR strategies with this....).

There's a list of Sweden, Norway, Finland's schools and top tuition free programs available online. I suggest more Americans discover one of Europe's best kept study abroad secrets - BEFORE it's too late. Here's the best place to start on the web

You might try the National Student Exchange ( nse.org ). You could transfer from a local US school, to another US school that has a study abroad program in a foreign county. Then you could pay US tuition, and many times pay your instate tuition even though you are getting credits from the school where you are studying abroad or the school offerin gthe study abroad. That school is on the list of study abroad programs. It is a great resource.

Funding to Study Abroad

It would have been more informative had Alan's background been explained. Is he enrolled at a US college but simply studying in Kassel for some period of time? Is he seeking a degree from the University of Kassel or from his home institution in the US? The article suggests he enrolled directly at the University of Kassel - but did he do this entirely on his own (i.e. he applied on his own without any facilitating support from a US college), is he participating in a German government program that facilitates the direct enrollment of U.S. students at German universities (e.g. DAAD), or is he participating in a U.S. university program that directly enrolls U.S. students at German universities (of which there are still quite a few)? Without explaining this crucial context, the advice given for "U.S. student studying at overseas schools" or for students "who want to study overseas" is less than helpful and actually quite confusing, especially by injecting the U.S. Dept of Education list. Now, as for finding funding for study abroad, here's a place to begin looking: http://www.studyabroadfunding.org/
