6 Ways McCain Can Run as the Candidate of the Party of an Unpopular President

I feel sorry for most of the commentators to this post
As I survey the many online venues for posting of comments on political columns and news, the level of venom, ingnorance, and immaturity on abundant display is truely dismaying. Even more so that many of the commentators may even have a legal right to vote or be licensed to drive. Apparently many of the Democratic party's supporters really need to get some outside interests other than video games, political echo chamber blogs, and providing strong evidence for the idiocy of one person/ one vote. Here's a suggestion, turn off the computer, get some exercise, and go to a real church. Just because you believe man created God in his image doesn't make it so. God help us all.
Lying media
I was not actually there, but I did see the reports of what happened in Cedarburg, WI, the first post-campaign stop for McCain and Palin. As the enormous crowd dispersed, many people saw the journalists boarding a bus and did what many of us have wanted to do. They shouted, "You are liars"; "Stop your lying", etc. (but all made reference to their biased coverage. I'll bet you did not see that on CNN or MSNBC on your Tv's. If people did that at every campaign stop, maybe even those miserable excuses for networks would have to sit up and take notice.
Hate and Venom
--Ghouliani, Palin, and Romney were all but spitting blood in their denunciation of all people that don't hold their narrow world view.
Wow, what an over the top reaction! Could you provide some specifics? They criticized the Messiah - true. But you have to forgive them because they do not share your religion.
As for a narrow world view...since Palin has allowed McCain to go ahead in the polls, perhaps the world view isn't that narrow.
Great analysis Mr. Barone.
And it shows the mettle of McCain that he has consistently been willing to buck the establishment throughout his entire political career.
Ms. Palin shows the world that not every woman fits the definition of the elitist feminists nor do some of us want to.
The "we're not from DC and we're proud of it" crowd has now been energized to see someone like us possibly going to DC.
No wonder the media and the liberals are having fits of rage. They didn't think the Republicans had it in them to put up a real fight.
Well you've got one now.
Obama may not be THE "Chosen One"
And the liberal Democrats can't stand it!
Six Ways
Doesn't anyone with any brains read your magazine? This was a great article - fair and balanced.
hate and lies from the left
McCain has worked with Democrats quite a bit to achieve bipartisan goals. Obama, on the other hand, has divided the Democratic Party itself. (Go PUMAs!) And he's the candidate of healing and unity? That's frightening.
All the hate and slime has come AFTER the RNC, as the haters on the left create lie after lie in their attacks on Palin and her children. Have you worked out Trig's ancestry yet? Why are you asking about whether Palin can be both VP AND a good mother, but not Obama? Sexist some? (He IS a father, last I heard; can he be both a good parent and President? Maybe he can just vote "Present!" for both!)
Comments from Bitter Dems Clinging to their Recylcing Bins
The dems (as evidenced by the three above) are fuming because the cult of personality surrounding The One is being threatened by The Other, and The Other -- aside from being charismatic to an extreme -- actually is from the middle class, rather than appealing to it from a distance. Your analysis was cogent and spot on, the bitter clingers above notwithstanding.
Not so much hate and venom
The speeches of Obama and Palin were the subject of a detailed analysis by the folks over at Volokh.com. The analysis looked at the number of negative comments about the opponent. It turns out that, contra "Michael" and "Al", Obama's speech had significantly more negativity than Palin's speech.

Of course, if all criticism of Republicans is legitimate and all questioning of the "Anointed One" is clearly out of bounds, then "Michael" and "Al" may have a point.
Oh, by the way, spelling Giuliani as "Ghouliani" is trite and immature - assuming that it was done on purpose rather than reflecting an inability to spell. Speaking of which, Al, it is "colossal" (not clossal) and "lemmings" (not "leemings"). Thank you both for representing Lefty Democrats in the style to which we've become accustomed.
Maverick
Maverick was the last name of a South Carolina immigrant to Texas in the 1800s. He was a lawyer who sometimes received payment from clients in cattle. He allowed these cattle to roam throughout the range unbranded. This practice allowed him to claim that any unbranded cattle were his. Unbranded cattle being referred to as Maverick's became a byword in that area.
