Polls Show Obama Damaged by Reverend Wright

March 25, 2008 12:28 PM ET | Michael Barone | Permanent Link

Corrected on 3/25/2008: An earlier version of this story incorrectly listed poll results and the date of a poll. On March 13, it was a 44 percent to 44 percent race in both McCain-Clinton and McCain-Obama. On March 18, McCain led both Obama and Clinton 48 percent to 42 percent.

Has Barack Obama been hurt by his association, now revealed to most American voters, with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright? Has the pope been hurt by his association, among people who don't like Catholics, with the Roman Catholic Church? The numbers from Rasmussen Reports supply some answers—mostly in the direction of yes.

The key dates here are March 13, when ABC News ran its report of Wright's rantings, and March 18, when Obama made his speech in Philadelphia in which he condemned some of Wright's remarks but refused to renounce him. Keep in mind that Rasmussen's numbers represent those on, typically, the last three nights (or the last night) before the date of the release.

Before the Wright revelations, Rasmussen in its nightly tracking showed Obama ahead of Clinton nationally 48 percent to 41 percent, a statistically significant 7 percentage point lead. On March 18, the day of Obama's Philadelphia speech, that was reduced to a 45 percent to 44 percent lead. The most recent results, reported March 24, showed Clinton ahead 46 percent to 44 percent. In other words, over two weeks, Obama was down 4 percentage points, Clinton up 5 percentage points—major movement, given the usually glacially show movement in Rasmussen numbers.

You can see something similar in Rasmussen's favorable and unfavorable numbers for the three surviving candidates. The table below shows the appropriate numbers for favorable and unfavorable:

  Obama Clinton McCain
March 13 51%-46% 48%-50% 51%-45%
March 18 52%-44% 47%-50% 53%-43%
March 24 46%-52% 42%-55% 55%-42%

Clinton's numbers have become somewhat more unfavorable. But the major difference is that McCain's fav/unfavs have become marginally more favorable, while Obama's have become significantly less favorable.

The results on pairings are even more striking. On March 13, it was a 44 percent to 44 percent race in both McCain-Clinton and McCain-Obama. On March 18, McCain led both Obama and Clinton 48 percent to 42 percent. On March 24, McCain led Obama 50 percent to 41 percent and Clinton 49 percent to 42 percent. While there's not very much difference between McCain's performance over Obama versus Clinton in the March 24 results, comparing the McCain-Obama numbers between March 13 and 24—only 11 days—shows Obama down 3 percentage points and McCain up 6 percentage points. That's a pretty big turnaround by Rasmussen standards.

Let's look at the general election pairings that Rasmussen has been providing us in great profusion. And specifically at how Obama is doing against McCain in those numbers. Rasmussen's electoral college update projects 168 votes as safely Republican, and the results in the few states (Georgia, South Dakota) in this category he has surveyed provide no basis for doubt that they are rightly categorized. Then let's look at the McCain and Obama percentages in the next categories:

Likely Republican

AR 59%-30%
NC 51%-42%

Another 21 electoral votes for McCain.

Leans Republican

FL 47%-43%
VA 49%-44%

Not huge leads for McCain, but he's running as far ahead in Florida as Bush did in 2004 and less so in Virginia, another 38 electoral votes: 168 + 21 + 38 = 227.

Tossup

CO 9 46%-46%
MI 15 44%-41%
MO 11 42%-40%
NV 5 41%-45%
OH 20 46%-40%

Leans Democratic

IA 7 41%-44%
MN 10 43%-47%
NH 4 46%-43%
NM 5 43%-43%
PA 21 44%-43%

Likely Democratic

NJ 15 45%-43%
OR 7 40%-49%
WA 11 45%-44%
WI 10 43%-44%

Awarding McCain the electoral votes where he is ahead, even by statistically insignificant margins (admittedly, a dicey proposition), he ends up with 324 electoral votes, with an additional 14 tied.

Not a commanding position, to be sure (too many statistically insignificant results). But one which, I think, tends to undercut the arguments of the Obama campaign that he would be a substantially stronger candidate in the general election than Clinton. And evidence that the Rev. Jeremiah Wright has taken the luster off Obama and made him a weaker candidate against McCain than he was two week ago. The Democratic pollster Mark Mellman, who is officially neutral in the race, has argued that it's impossible to know which Democrat would be stronger in November against McCain. I think Mellman is quite right on this. But if the argument for Obama has been that he has a larger upside potential than Clinton, these numbers tend to suggest that upside potential is not so great; and if the argument against Obama is that he has a larger downside potential than Clinton, these numbers suggest that negative potential is more likely to be realized. And of course if you're a Democratic candidate, or a party official, in states where Obama is running dangerously behind Clinton (West Virginia, for example) or where Obama's possibility of running way ahead of Clinton seems endangered (in the Pacific Northwest), you may want to respond to local conditions.

Bottom line: These numbers make the Democratic superdelegates' decisions tougher than ever.

The Audacity of Hate; Barack Obama’s Trinity United Church of Christ’s with Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A Wrong

The Audacity of Hate; Barack Obama’s Trinity United Church of Christ’s with Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A Wrong and his Racist Sermons & his Racist Supporters.

We have come too far to accept any type of racism. I feel bad for those who continually ignore the facts and blindly follow Obama. It reminds me of what happened in 1940 when Germany followed Hitler into genocide acts. Rev. Wright is preaching HATE.

Obama supporters stop with the excuses and victimization - hate breeds hate. How many children are sitting in Rev. Wright's church listening to his racial remarks?

Recently, Obama had the New Black Panther endorsement on his website. While Obama may not control who endorses him, he does CONTROL who he puts on the Official Presidential website. From the Black Panther Website: “We will protect ourselves from the force and violence of the racist police and the racist military, “by any means necessary.”

Imagine if Hillary Clinton’s church proclaimed on its website that it is “unashamedly white.” The media would pounce, and Clinton’s presidential candidacy would be over. Yet that is exactly what Barack Obama’s church says on its web site — except in reverse.

"Wright on Israel: "The Israelis have illegally occupied Palestinian territories for over 40 years now. Divestment has now hit the table again as a strategy to wake the business community and wake up Americans concerning the injustice and the racism under which the Palestinians have lived because of Zionism.

For the same reason why I would not vote for any candidate that attended The David Duke Church of Christ is the same reason why I cannot vote for anyone who sat for twenty (20) years in the Trinity united Church of Christ.

McCain ties to racist

How come no one bring up McCain is embracing racist like John Hagee.

Obama Speech

History will view this speech as Lincolnesque in its immediacy and courage and relevance.

History will say Obama could have done some kind of tactical maneuver that would have really hurt his credibility and integrity much more and that this situation was a test and he took it on.

Trust me, you haven't seen anything yet. In regard to what he can and will do. And to make the world a better place.

Yes, press gets cynical because negativity sells. It's part of what longs for change.

The superdelegates need to wake up and do what is right for us in the general election and that is get behind the one candidate that can beat McCain.... Clinton!!

Obama dedicated his book…20 years of his church going life...and about 2,000$ a week to a hate spewing bigot...he calls "like a uncle to me"...

And I am supposed to be worried about Clinton's judgement?

Music From the Religious Right

If you were dismayed by Rev. Wright, how about listening to the Religious Right version of "God Bless America"? here it is;

http://www.rightwingwatch.org/2007/09/why_should_god_bless_america.html

Obama, in Trouble Last Week, Went Deeply Negative vs. Clinton

I think that the favorable-unfavorable stats for Clinton reflect the Obama campaign's steeply negative attacks against Clinton last week. By Friday, his campaign's update was essentially calling her untrustworthy, a liar and accused her of having bad character.

This shows Obama's been clawing at Clinton as he fought to rehabilitate himself from the "Pastor Disaster" fallout.

The Obama campaign's stabs at Clinton as he sought to drown out his own negatives last week have damaged both candidates and are a disappointing indication that his campaign promise of being a new kind of politician is probably untrue.

Guilt by association?

I do not see anyone condemming HRC for her continued association on a 24/7 - 2hr a week basis - with a confessed adulterer of 25+ years, or a person who had so little respect for our country to have a sexual encounter in OUR White House Oval office - a space that is borrowed from the citizens of the US of A, or the 24/7 association with a person who lied under oath to our congress.... It goes on and on.

Talk about guilt by association....or is it all just to help her chances at a grab for power?

Wright the Mullah not Pator...

Hate, Divisiveness, Anger, and revenge are tools of the Devil / Islam.

Wake up America everyone is equal and they are where they should be according to their plan or lack there of.

Many immigrants come here with nothing and in no time they rise to the top. This is the land of opportunity and freedom.

Slavery was abolished over a Century ago, and the reminence is only present in the minds of those that will not do something for themselves.

Bill Cosby should be voted in as Saint, for he speaks volumes on this issue.

This is the Blessed Land of The United States of America, and if Mullah Wright continue to spew hatred, perhaps he needs to join Muktadar and Sadr.

We need to honestly take responsibility and ownership of our situtation and stop blaming others. In blaming others we move no-where.

Sounds like Farrakhan ??

Pastor J. Wright's speeches sound a LOT like Nation of Islam L. Farrakhan.....both hate America and whites.

Obama shows POOR JUDGMENT in the people he associates with.

A president must show GOOD judgment, as Obama himself says.

Obama Speech

Have any of you people seen anything other than the snippets on TV of Rev. Wright's sermon? Didn't think so. Educate yourselfs people. Rejoice in the fact that Obama has come to Christ. Do not condemn the path that brought him there.

why the polls

If the polls are showing a decline in his numbers, it bascially has to do with 1.)

The media with it's slanted agenda, didn't give the full text of the pastor speech. Which could have put his statement in a more broader context, than what they have been showing. 2.) It also goes to show that some in white america, no matter what the situation is, will never vote for anything but a another white american for the title of president. they are going to condem obama for his pastor remarks, but yet still go to the same church where in fact some preist have committed crimes against children and such other things. But yet, I don't recall a mass exdous of people from the churches. Other figures have came out with their reasoning behind 9/11, some of which have blamed it on certain groups of americans. But I guess that's fine, because they were only talking about what some would called the "outcasts" of american society,

but when one comes out with sighting actual facts relative to the history of this country, they are banished. I don't think reverend wright will be the problem, but american hidden racism will definitly shine from now throughout this election.

why can't we talk about

Why can't we talk about the dirty history of this country?

I mean, columbus was a crook. The queen gave him criminals to take on his madien voyage. They came over and raped and piledged and killed many native americans. The goverment put small pox into the blankets of the native american to kill them off. Oh and they took their land as well.

Can't forget slavery or "Jim Crows" laws or the lychings.

Can't forget we were the first to nuke another country.

why do so many american get offended when these topics are brought up?

A statistically unsophisticated analysis

I hope people here realize that there are much more sophisticated ways of using the very same data the author is trying to use here, to predict the fall election. Just assigning states in a binary (on/off) fashion to one candidate or another, even if they are close, ignores not just the fact that the differences are within the margin of error, but that there is a finite chance of anyone winning any state, which grows according to the binomial distribution as the gap gets better in their direction. So to assume a bunch of Obama losses in states that he has brought into play, but AT THIS POINT, he is still just behind McCain in, ignores the advantage he brings there over Clinton, for whom those states are much more remote propositions.

If you go to a political predictions market like www.intrade.com, right now you'll see that Obama and Clinton have very similar "electability" ratios (the ratio of the likelihood of being president to their nomination likelihoods, as settled on by traders who are trading the futures for real money).

You All Just Don't Listen

It really doesn't matter what anyone says, you all just won't listen. Barack's girls are not being taught hate. Rev. Wright is a very intelligent man, and I had never heard of him until recently. I guarantee that this article is not being written by an African American, because you have no idea of what it's like to be black in America. One thing you must keep in mind is that Barack Obama has also lived in a "white household", and those things that are said inside the "White" house, he's heard them firsthand. So please, don't throw stones at Jeremiah Wright because he is not a coward, but chose to express his views in the context of discussing the "Old Testament scriptures", openly.

Just recenlty, in my hometown, our own District Attorney was asked to resign for including a cartoon in an email depicting an African-American suffering from a "fatal overdose" of watermelon and fried chicken. Racial overtones exist and are real. Stop fooling yourselves as though they should be kept silent. It's a long story and can't be summed up in a simple statement. But just let it go! We are so tired of hearing about it. Get some real news. It's not going to change anything!

People are Naive

I'm under sniper fire here, so I have to make this snappy...

When are people going to wake up and realize that the Clintons are OUTRIGHT LIARS, and that Obama's church has NOTHING to do with this election? IT"S A MEDIA/CLINTION MACHINE SMOKE SCREEN designed to distract from the issues and make Barack look unelectable. Barack has said that the Rev. Wright did not harp on these issues when he attended Trinity, and stressed that he does not share in those sentiments. WHY CAN'T THAT BE ENOUGH?

WHY IS EVERYONE insisting that he DENOUNCE his church? If he did, the same blind nay-sayers would just say something like: "See, he's got no backbone to stand up for what he believes in", and that he's just "lying for political reasons". They'd call him a "typical politician". Well he does have a backbone, and has demonstrated this by staying his ground.

Well, what's her name's lies are starting to show, folks...maybe the Rev. Wright just "misspoke".

Preaching Hate

The comments that Rev. Wright made are hateful, period. There are certain words that can never be taken out of context. I was ready to vote for Obama until the news came out that he has been affiliated with this kind of church and this kind of pastor for over 20 years. I hope Clinton gets the nomination, so I can vote for her. If not I will have to vote for McCain. I am the swing vote that you read about in the media.

Rev Wright

No way now would I vote for a Racist liar.

Plenty of time for him to catch up

He will easily overcome this drop in polls...he always does.

No excuses

Obama tried to explain and give excuses to the anti-american vitriol (God Damn America???) of his pastor of 20 years. I can tell you: there is no excuses whatsoever to this type of remarks!!!

Young Atheart

A simple quiz - Which of following shows Obama's racist or anti-american values?

a. The 800+ bills that Obama wrote or sponsored in IL

http://www.nytimes.com/imagepages/2007/07/29/us/politics/20070730_OBAMA_GRAPHIC.html

b. His US senate bills on WW threat reduction, government ethics, and immigration reform that he co-sponsored with Senator Lugar, Coburn and and Hagel.

http://thomas.loc.gov

c.The expanded health care he passed for 150,000 people

d. Risk his US Senate run with a no-holds-barred position on Iraq when nearly the entire Congress was beating the war drums

http://www.digg.com/politics/Full_text_of_Barack_Obama_s_2002_Speech_Against_the_Iraq_War

e. Risk his white-house run with an unpopular position to strike Pakistani targets if Musharraf did not act

http://abcnews.go.com/Video/playerIndex?id=3458915

f. Offer to meet with enemies with preparation but without preconditions (similar to positions of Reagan and Nixon that lead to detante w/ Soviet Union and China)

It is naive and dangerous to presume to know what one man can learn from his church or pastor and then to make that the basis for political support. It is exactly this kind of behavior that American founders wanted to change when crafting this secular democracy.

By listening to hurtful words for twenty years, Obama speaks profound truths that every American should listen to - with their children. (Frankly children get their cues from their parents' reactions to radical ideas, not the ideas themselves.)

Do we think that President Reagan and Bush would compare the USA to Hitler because they supported a preacher who did?

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/frank-schaeffer/obamas-minister-committe_b_91774.html

"This stranglehold has got to be broken or the country's going down the drain," said Billy Graham, agreeing with Nixon's comments about Jews and their influence in American life. Later, Graham mentions that he has friends in the media who are Jewish, including A.M. Rosenthal, saying they "swarm around me and are friendly to me." But, he tells Nixon, "They don't know how I really feel about what they're doing to this country."

Pat Robertson, the advisor to many presidents, also believes God allowed the 9/11 attacks as punishment for our evil country. I won't even bring up Parsley and Hagee.

Grow up America or forever loose your destiny.

Jeremiah Wright's effect on the election

I'm furious with the media for not vetting Obama. Basically, he was given a free pass. It looks like Uncle Jeremiah has just ceded the general election to an a man too old to be President-one who doesn' t comprehend the economic realities: In addition to the human cost, a prolonged war in Iraq will bankrupt this nation. May God bless America: We need all the help we can get.

How many Rev Wright articles can you write in a month. Get a grip ...write about how the earth is not flat ...or something ...geeze!

Choices

There are 116 United Church of Christ churches in the Chicago area. There are over a dozen within 10 miles of Barack & Michelle Obama’s home. Why that church? As a private citizens if your family is fine with a pastor and church who holds as even a small part of there views anti American, Anti Semitic, Pro Hamas Terrorist organization, Anti white as part of the ministry it is your right to stay as members and be feed spiritually there and if that is what feeds your soul, fine we as fellow Americans support your rights to that. As to America being OK with our President being a member of such a church, we say no way! No one has ask you to change faiths but a change in church fellowship and spiritual advisers of which you have 116 other churches and pastors to choose from is totally within a reasonable request for someone running to be the next President of the United States! Thank you Barack Obama for your radio address where you let us know you and Michelle have chosen to continue being spiritually feed from that specific church and pastor with ALL there messages. We will support your right to that as a private citizen but we will not elect you as our President. Change & Unity are more then words they require action and hard work! The kind of solutions to serious problems we face is what Hillary Clinton offers us and is the real change and unity we are looking for. You may speak the words about these things but your actions do not.

wright

The stupidity of the average american is beyound belief. The rest of the world is looking at us as a bunch of lunatics. We have an endless war in Iraq costing billions of dollars and thousands of lives that just got hotter today with the ceasefire accord broken with Al-sqadr.We have a president who continually strips our civil liberties and a justice dept. that does not believe in justice or the constitution, our economy is in a shambles and the cost of oil keeps rising as othe value of our dollar collapses. If this keeps up I think we are all headed for destruction. So what are we discussing for the last two weeks and probably until November, a pastor's sermon who holds no public office and a woman who lies about being sniped at in Bosnia.God Damm America.

THE IUDGEMENT AND CHOICES OF OBAMA?

Please review the CNN interview by Anderson Cooper #1 and compare to Obama's speech on 3/18/08.

Church views seldom get public air

I am sure there were numerous good principles taught at Obama's church...many churchs have traditions that never get publicly debated.

Rev. Wright

I believe it will hurt Senator Obama because in the past he's said that words mean something and if they do, how come he was a member of that church for 20 years and didn't disagree with him over the years? I know in the past, the blacks have legitimate complaints in how they were treated but so have the women in this country as well as the world. I think that's why Senator Hillary Clinton's comment that the media is treating Senator Obama like he's sitting on a pillow is correct. Hopefully, in the future, we will have our first woman president or our first black president and I'm wondering that if this would have surfaced six months earlier, would these two candidates have still been so close in delegates and voters?

Yours truly, LaVern

They're all the same

Obama spoke of having good judgement.

Twenty years of bringing your family to hear the hate sermons of Rev. Wright is his opinion of having good judgement?

Under the veneer of doing good these politicans are all alike. Say one thing and do another. Thank God, every 4 years we voters get to exchange one monkey for another. One monkey drives hitting the left curb, the next monkey the right curb. Never one that can drive straight down the middle of the road.

Obama is CORRUPT, a LIAR, and his slogan of change an ILLUSION.

Obama is CORRUPT, a LIAR, and his slogan of change an ILLUSION.

1) CORRUPT: A houseowner wants to sell both a house and adjoining land. Obama can afford to buy only the house. No problem, the criminal Rezko to the rescue. Rezko pays full price for the land, whereas Obama gets a discount of $300,000 on the house. Nice to have criminal friends like this!!! (ref ABC News)

2) LIAR: Obama claims he did not know about Wright's America-hating (God damn America) and racist views till it was revealed in the mainstream media in March 2008. Obama attended Wright's church for 20 years, was married by Wright, had his children baptized by Wright, donated over $20,000 to Wright's church and named his book "Audacity of Hope" after one of Wright's sermons. You really believe after 20 years and all this he did not know?

3) ILLUSION: Exelon Corporation had not disclosed radioactive leaks at one of its nuclear plants in Illinois. Obama, a senator for Illinois introduces a bill to make disclosures mandatory. Seems like Exelon doesn't like it. Each draft of the new bill by Obama goes more and more towards Exelon till disclosures end up being "voluntary". What gives? How about $250,000+ donations by Exelon!!! Obama is not change, he is WASHINGTON BUSINESS AS USUAL. (ref NYT)

People need to realize that Hillary has been fighting for them all along. All the way back to 1993 when she tried to introduce universal health care.

Wright Wing Politics

When it comes to electing the President of the United States, I hope the choice may ultimately hinge on selecting a candidate who will stand up FOR America and not just stand up TO America. With Rev. Wright whispering from the wings, Obama would be wrong for America.

Obama is a Con Man ...

He claims to be a Moderate ...

Would a Moderate spend 20 years listening to hate speech ?

Would a Moderate marry his wife with her attitude ?

Would a Moderate have the most liberal voting record in the Senate ?

So if he is not a Moderate why is he trying to pass as one ?

He is nothing more than an intellectual coward who is afraid to speack his mind because power is more important to him than the truth ...

A Con Man ... who supports a racist church and has an anti-American wife ... now thats change I can believe in ...

Worry about supporters

Obama's reasoning, though flawed in some ways, worries me less than that of his online supporters. Here, as with everywhere I read comments sections, the people defending him use reasons that aren't reasons. The particular reasons I commonly see are 1) America has done bad things, therefore anyone criticising it is correct; 2) You don't know what it's like to be black, so all your criticisms of Wright are invalid; 3) It would be better to get beyond race, therefore Obama wishing it is our best bet; 4) Republicans/McCain/Bush are supported by even worse people.

Simple example from above. Pat Robertson has been advisor to zero American presidents of any party.

People, this just isn't thinking. There are elements of thought and correctness in each of these, but none of them holds up as a reason. Journalists focus on the horse race, not the ideas - supporters focus on irrelevant ideas - when is someone going to make the case for this man based on reason?

The Jewish Vote

Jews have been the most reliably anti-racist of any American religious grouping with the possible exception of Quakers.

Obama has lost the Jewish vote. There goes FL and NY - 58 electoral votes.

Probably NJ as well. Another 15 EVs. That is 63 EVs almost certain for McCain. About 1/4 of the required votes to win. That is a very big hole to fill.

Also consider the Governor scandals in NY and NJ. That has got to shift sentiment some as well.

Electability

The "typical white person" remark will probably do far more damage than anything his lunatic pastor said. McCain might not use it, but once the general campaign is under way you can expect that recording to become the bump music on talk radio.

"How come no one bring up McCain is embracing racist like John Hagee"

I thought McCain from Arizona. He been regularly attend church in San Antonio for 20 years?

Must have missed that - sorry.

A DILLUSIONED BUNCH

It strikes me as unbelievable that a community I once viewed as the most open minded and educated has this temerity and could see less of the trouble that looms within it.

Rev. Wright had a 20seconds negative message taken from thousands of postive messages he has given over the years and it is about the affect your lives negatively. If the hate message as it appears was longer than that, you think the master minder of its surfacing in the media wouldn't bring it forth.

Wake up America, please uphold the principles for which I had loved you. I am not American but would have loved to be.... But I am so shamed that the community for

which I could have happily given mine to accept theirs is this lame.

Search within your hearts and see beyond the lines... the message was aimed at something, what was it.... to stop Obamas rising popularity.... were those Obamas speech...NO... common people wake up....

What ever affect America has a ripple effect on the rest of the world. I have lost so much already in the Asian stock market over the failing American economy...

Please help us save the world by embracing the postive hopeful change that has come to the rest of the world... OBAMA...

And Clinton supporters do not get me wrong, I quite accept that she would positively affect the American nation but Obama is a once in a life time opportunity, please embrace it and help the rest of the world.

The hate the exists between the Islamic and the Christain faith would be quelled under the Obama hopeful regime.. and the world would be a whole lot safer... And people like me could use passenger aircrafts without the fear of the unknown eventuality...

God bless America and the World at large.

They're both bad choices

Obama claims he's different, reciting "change" like a mantra, but he's the same as any other democrat, saying whatever he has to say to get support to get elected.

His change he proposes include:

universal healthcare to some extent or another

Higher taxes (MUCH higher because of the above)

higher corporate taxes (stick it to those "evil" corporations and they won't have as much money for employees, which brings us to the next point)

higher unemployment

more government pork barrel spending on vote buying projects

The top 50% of income earners pay over 96% of the income taxes paid.

We need to repeal the 16th amendment and go with the FairTax, and require a 3/5ths majority to raise the tax, and we need to repeal the 17th amendment and restore teh Senate to representing the states, restoring the intended checks and balances to federal abuse of power and restrict federal government growth as the writers of the constitution intended it to do. Then we'd hopefully have someone enforcing the 10th amendment instead of ignoring it (and the rest of the Constitution) completely.

No negative effect

Wright's comments didn't have a negative effect. After Obama's speech he has been able to regain a lead against Clinton. That said, he is no longer invincible the Wright "incident" has shown that Obama can be struck. The problem is that he was able to regain in the polls so quickly. If not positive in polls against Clinton he is now back to even with her.

If you look here you'll see that Obama has been able to get back up rather quickly after the Wright fiasco.

Stop spinning, Obamatrons

And stop insulting the intelligence of anyone with access to the web.

"Out of context" argument: puh-leeze! TUCC's bulletins are online, and they reveal a pattern of anti-America, anti-Israel, anti-white rhetoric.

TUCC is a church of black liberation theology. This means, in a nutshell, Jesus recast as a Marxist, black separatist deity.

Trying to argue that Rev. Wright had "good" sermons, whatever that means, is like defending Mussolini for making trains run on time. A futile exercise in defending the indefensible.

Therein Lies the Problem

A few seconds of Rev. Wright's speech has been shown over and over again like water torture or to subliminally stick in the minds of future voters. Therein lies the problem about which Rev. Wright was concerned. This proves what he was trying to say. Racism. The media is run by racists, obviously. (Prove me wrong) I noticed that Hillary's words and video at Bosnia were shown for a day or two. But they have ceased. The ones showing Rev. Wright have not. So when they say Rev. Wright is a hater, count the number of times you will see that video and how many times you will see Hillary's Bosnia videos. Rev. Wright should have said what he really means. "God Damn America"... the way it now operates.

Would You Buy A Used Edsel From Mubarak Hussein Obama?

Obama's daughters are being taught to hate America, and to hate Obama's grandmother-their own great-grandmother! Why is Obama's wife so ashamed of America? Why does Obama's pastor try to create insurrection against America?

This man who wants to be king of the world has lost his moral compass. He wants to captain the ship of the free world, but he never got his mariner's license. Confused and in a daze, Obama staggers toward the prize with arrogance and a sense of entitlement.

This will simply not do, America! Time to wake up, my friends, and understand the trap of "declinism" that Obama and Wright have fallen into. Take care not to fall into the same trap.

Ohio

I am not going to vote for Hillary, regardless of the situation. My neighbor 7 houses down from us had 3 Obama signs in their front yard and had bumper Stickers "Yes we can" on both of their cars. They are now all gone -came off right after the Wright hate sermons.

Its the Black Liberation Theology, Stupid

"Rev. Wright had a 20seconds negative message taken from thousands of postive messages"

It was a hell of a lot more than 20 seconds. Here is the foundation of Black Liberation Theology, as preached by Wright and supported by "post-racial" Obama for 20 years:

"Black theology will accept only the love of God which participates in the destruction of the white enemy." - Cone

I'm not voting for any disciple who supported that filth. And neither will America.

Mr unelectable.

Obama should for once in his adult life put action over words and put the country before himself and graciously bow out of the race before he sets the country back 50 years in racial tensions. The country will not elect him president! NO HOW NO WAY! He attended a racist church for 20 years HIS WIFE ECHOED the sentiments of the church when she said "she has never been proud to be an AMERICAN in her adult life". He used racial terms from MALCOLM X in SOUTH CAROLINA to get over 80% of the black vote there. HE HOODWINKED THEM BAMBOOZLED THEM AND GAVE THEM THE OKEY -DOKE. TERMS FROM MALCOLM x S SPEECH IN HARLEM. His ties to Rezko, auchi, and Alsamarrae will not fade into the past as well. Barack is unelectable and that is all there need be said.

Jacques,

I agree and hope that Obama and his pastor continue talking about the dirty history of our country. I hope they go even further and explain to me and all of the other crackers why we should pay higher taxes so that we can make reparations for the sins of our great grandfathers. Also, they should continue to explain to us rubes out here that Wright's sermons really aren't that radical by black church standards. That's a real good point to keep hammering. And Obama should promise to open up the records on the program to develop HIV.

Sincerely,

Evil Republican

Polls

Some one is liveing in a fantasie land. Just came on t.v. the wright thing really didn't hurt Obama much, but Hillarys Lie's has really harmed her in the Polls. If Hillary doesn't release all her tax return true and proper next week than She's simplly dead.

Obama's Mentor and spiritual leader

A year ago when I first heard abou Reverend Wright, I dismissed it as a smear.

However now that I've read TUCC website , seen many of Wright's sermons in their entirety, and read the numerous criticisms of Black Liberation Theology.. I realise that Obama's church is a racist, hate-mongering cult disguised as Christianity so it can pander to our black Americans.

I don't discard it's congregation though, they are Americans too. I feel they''ve been victimized by this Rev Wright and by Barack Obama as well

Book dedication

Did Obama really dedicate his book to Rev. Wright?

Obama is really taken by him, was that why both spent Easter weekend in the Virgin Islands, surely Obama knew the world would find that out, his ministers rooms were listed as $399 a night, a bit pricy but Obama has the cash and yet it could be charged to the church as he still has an empty chair in the pulpit for any time he wants to use it.

Japan and Germany were once America's enemies; today, they are our allies

A great leader is one who could reach out to even his nation's enemies and make them his country's allies. America could have continued making Japan and Germany her enemies after WW II. But America didn't, and in fact helped Japan and Germany rebuild under the Marshall Plan.

Rev. Wright must have some good points about him. He had served both in the US Marines and in the US Army. He had also received a Rockefeller Fellowship and seven honorary doctorate degrees, including from Colgate University, Valparaiso University, United Theological Seminary and Chicago Theological Seminary as well as .three presidential commendations from President Lyndon B. Johnson. And immediately after the 9/11 attacks, was one of a 100 selected VIP guests at the Whilte House, under President Clinton. So, he has some weird ideas, but he isn't running for the White House.

Senator Obama is showing good leadership by not making him an enemy, but has given Rev. Wright an understanding that Rev. Wright's hateful words should be condemned. To see Rev. Wright shying away from receiving his recent award, and canceling his pre-arranged are, very possibly, the beginning we see of Rev. Wright repenting.

We were hasty with what we've done to Iraq, based on convoluted hate by some, and what do we gain from that Iraq war? A hefty National Debt, 4000 of our young soldiers killed, and Bil Laden still alive and laughing.

There are very important issues facing America today. Please don't let those with convulated hate against Rev. Wright distract us away from the major issues, the way we were being distracted with the Iraq War instead of going after the al-Qaedas. Are we going to let the very same people who distracted us from our war against the al-Quedas in 2002/2003, distract us from the more important issues we face today. Check out how the same NeoCons and the idiotic media, in those days, cheered us to attack iraq and made us forget Bin Laden. Wise up, let them not fool us again today.

WAKE UP BEFORE ITS TOO LATE

Obama attended Reverend Wright's church for twenty years. Wright married Obama and his wife, and baptized their children. Wright was Obama's mentor and spiritual advisor.

Reverend Wright is a man who says Goddamn America. How can that be acceptable to ANY American?

If he or any other person living in America thinks the U.S. is a bully that deserved 9/11 and should be damned, I have two words for you. GET OUT. If this country sucks so bad, then why are you still here? How dare you speak poorly of your country and yet continue to take advantage of its freedoms?

There is NO POSSIBLE WAY that Obama doesn't feel the same way about America as Reverend Wright does. If he disagreed with Wright's views in any way, he would not have continued to attend the church for twenty years. There is NO POSSIBLE WAY that as Obama's mentor and spriritual advisor he was not aware of Reverend Wright's racism and hatred.

I know that many of you liberals are under a trance by Obama's public speaking abilities. But please, WAKE UP! Reverend Wright is a cancer in this country, and Obama is as well. Obama hates this country, and so does his disgusting wife. Don't be fooled by his EMPTY promises of CHANGE.

Obama's speech

When I see some peoples high praise of Obama's speech on race, I have to wonder if English is their second language. There was absolutley nothing special about that speech. I could have done better ,heck, most people could.

What wasn't "borrowed" from others , was a sick attempt to defend Wright/Obama 's hatemongerig Idealogies.

Yes I said it!... ideals that Obama holds too

Haven't his supporters read his books???

Obama seach for his friends started in college with Marxists, anti-Americans, black millitants and anyone radically left.

He searched out , embraced and stayed loyal to Reverend Wright for 20 years. And still hasn't parted ways. Wright only "retired" last month, when the IRS started an investigation of TUCC because of his campaigning for Obama from the pulpit.

He then went to work for Obama fulltimeas head of his African American leadership commitee.

VERY Poor Judgement

By being a member of TUCC, Barack has shown that he lacks judgement. No one in their right minds would accept the preachings from this pastor. Remember he was a member of this church for twenty years, not twenty days.....and therefore he had to know what was being preached at his church. Do I hold Barack responsible for what his preacher spewed? No, but I do hold him responsible for being a member there and for not condemning his pastor until after it became a problem for himself (Barack). Do I think he had no clue how his pastor really felt about these issues? Not a chance.....Remember he invited him to be his spiritual advisor and then disinvited him when he was first annoucing his run for presidency....You don't do something like that to your own pastor if there wasn't reason for it. He KNEW he was controversial.

This will die down for Barack in the meantime, but if he wins the democratic nomination and I think he will, it will be brought back up again and again and 527's will have commercial after commercial about it...It will hurt him in the November elections and while I never thought John McCain ever really had a chance, I am now beginning to see that as a real possibility. I truly believe the majority of American's are patriotic people and many, many that I have talked to and some who were Barack supporters in the primaries are now questioning if he is deserving of their vote. I believe in the long run there is just too much doubt about Barack's patriotism or lack of judgement with this Rev. Wright thing and many will vote the other way. I pray so.

obama

Why are we just finding out about Wright and his hate speech now?? Did the Media keep this under wraps - Had voters known about the Church, etc, I doubt Obama would be in the position, he is now.

The View statement "Had he not retired, I might have left the church" is disingenious and can not possibly be true, Had he said, I got caught in the cookie jar and politically must cut Wright adrift, is more the truth. Does anyone believe his View statement???

Say what?

Obama said if the preacher hadn't recently retired he would have left the church. It took him 20 years to figure out what was going on.!!! I would say that's a little slow on the uptake.

Pastor Disaster

I cannot get past the "Pastor Disaster " because I cannot get past Rev. Wright's rhetoric. Just like I cannot see J. Dahlmer's "good works" because he ate people. Some people cannot get past Condi Rice's "good works" because she is an Antie Tammy. (Summarization of Rev. Wright's words.)

Rev. Wright will be a millstone around Obama's neck because Obama aspires to hope. What hope does Rev. Wright offer to the African-American community? None... I'm sorry... Payback. In his speech in Philadelphia, Obama justified Rev. Wright's rhetoric because of 400 years of racism. Grandma's "bigotry" was as bad as Rev. Wright's rhetoric. Don Imus's rhetoric was worse that Rev. Wright's rhetoric. What hope does Obama give the African-American community? Payback.. and continued racism from whites.. In other words. No hope.

Obama's base will not be offended by Rev. Wright's comments and Obama's association with Rev. Wright. Rev. Wright's rhetoric is typically Progressive. Obama is a typical Progressive.

The "Pastor Disaster" is an Independent, Moderate, and Conservative phenomenon. Moderates, Independents, and some Republicans are leaving Obama. Not his base.. Progressives.

Rev. Wright's Military Service

I formerly served as a Navy Corpsman and I can tell you that service schools do not recognize accademic achievement with the Valdictorian or Salutatorium designations. Also, I served later as a Marine Officer and frankly I question the verasity of Rev. Wright's claims. I sure would like to see his DD 214's from both of the services and compare those to his public claims.

That's one CRAZY Reverend!!

When Rev. Pat Robertson said the 911 attacks were God's wrath against America for gays, feminists and the ACLU, no one batted an eye! Isn't that like saying God DAMNED America?! Does that mean if we were more like Arabic countries where women "stay in their place" 911 wouldn't have occurred? Preachers should be treated like your drunk Uncle who always says crazy things but no one in your family listens.

"Wright" ?

Obama owes a MAJOR apology to all Americans' because of his minister! NO WAY will I vote for Obama because of this damage besides the fact he is all talk with NO EXPERIENCE! Are people really "dumb as sheep"? WAKE UP AMERICA!

Sell out

Obama owes Americans no apology or no one else . he can not be held accountable for what Rev Wright said. Rev. has a right to say what ever he want to,

tha same as each one of you, freedom of speech.some of you may nat agree with

what he said. but a great deal of what he said is true.

I hear Hillary saying that she would have left the church if that had been her pastor.

Bill have have had many, many affairs before Monica. even when he was attorney general of Arkansas to the president. Everyone in the world knew about him having oral sex with Monica and Hillary did not leave Bill. But she can say what Obama should have done.

Also I would like to know how much Hillary and Bill paid Rev. Wright for his services. Bill said that they will win at all cost, maybe this is some of what he meant.

Racism a two-way street

Noted Sheila Lister's (of TX) comments. Don't understand her. Is racism real in this country? Yeah. And, you can see a preacher preaching it. She's exactly right: Acknowledge it (racism) - just not selected pieces - all of it.

A Black mans sermon

I believe that rev.wright has had an enormous affect on Barack Obama throught out the election. Rev. Wright had no reason judging the United States but then again free speech!
