Obama's Minister Problem

March 17, 2008 05:31 PM ET | Michael Barone | Permanent Link | Print

It's starting to look like Barack Obama is paying a political price for the hate-filled rhetoric of his longtime pastor and spiritual mentor (Obama's description), the Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Realclearpolitics.com's latest polls show John McCain leading Obama 46 to 45 percent, even though Obama was ahead in 14 of 16 polls taken between February 1 and March 2. Currently, Scott Rasmussen's poll has McCain leading Obama 48 to 42 percent; a week ago, he had McCain insignificantly ahead, 45 to 44 percent. Rasmussen has Obama's favorability declining from 52 percent on March 13 to 47 percent on March 17. He also shows Wright viewed favorably by just 8 percent of voters, while 73 percent consider his comments racially divisive. Note the varying responses of blacks and whites to Wright's remarks.

Rasmussen's figures no longer support the argument that Obama is a stronger general-election candidate than Hillary Clinton, at least right now. And he seems headed for a weaker showing in Pennsylvania than his 54-to-44 percent loss in Ohio. The RCP average in Pennsylvania is 52 to 36 percent. This just may be, as RCP's John McIntyre writes, "time to buy Hillary Clinton." And, he might have added, John McCain.

Racism in America

You are correct in stating racism is alive in America. Obama has demonstrated he is a racist by associating for 20+ years with a whitey hating minister that Obama calls his mentor and spiritual leader. No comparison to McCain being supported by Fallwell and Robertson unless you can prove to me that either of them have been McCains mentor or spiritual leader. McCain cannot help who supports him; he can only control who he supports!

Obama has been supporting the spew of Wright long enough to demonstrate to me that Obama shares his views. Obama is a racist.

Funny in America huh? Call an African American a racist and that just does not compute. Why? Racism is racism no matter what color is directing it.

Obama for President and this latest stuff

I believe is Obama is just a sweet-talking politician. I have yet to see anything concrete from him. And yes, the idea that his preacher who gives him spiritual

guidance hates white people scares me. I agree blacks have not always been treated well. I believe there have been many mistakes in the past and there's still prejudice going on. However, by preaching hate and not unity, is that getting the world anywhere. I am not prejudice. But if you're preaching that the white race

should be "killed" and "condemned", of course it's going to create more racial issues. We celebrate "Black History" month in an effort to engage all people together. We celebrate Martin Luther King day for his vision and leadership. We don't celebrate "White History" month because we'd get condemned for racism. This country has tried to help all these issues by putting in place legislature for hate crimes, equal hiring practices, etc. While it's not perfect, it's sure trying. Aren't we going backwards if Obama believes in what his preacher is striving for. And honestly, I would not be part of a congregation in which any hate is preached. I cannot see anything I can get from a church like that unless I actually buy into those principles.

Christianity is that first, not black rights, then Christianity. And Christianity teaches love and forgiveness. His preacher has a hidden agenda. Christianity is definitely not first on his list.

I was not going to vote for Obama because I think he lacks substance. The recent articles coming out supports my initial beliefs. I think we're making a big mistake if he becomes President. And I think it's a huge mistake for the Democrats to put him in the race against McCain. All of this will come up and we'll end up with a Republican president again (and we need that changed).

Obama's racist preacher comments

When Obama worships in a church with such a racist and unamerican preacher for twenty years and then brings up comments about typical white people, should have some serious concerns. Most of my friends and I are white democrats, how do you think we feel.I think John McCain wil get alot of white democrat votes if this man gets nomination.
