Message to Women: Save

The Women's Institute for a Secure Retirement has a message for the ladies: Save more money. Because women tend to live longer and earn less, the organization says those of us with two X chromosomes need to put extra thought into saving for our golden years. Here are some of WISER's tips:

• Accept that you will probably live longer than you expect. (This might not sound like a bad thing, but WISER says a big risk for women is outliving their savings.)

• Learn about various sources of retirement income, including Social Security and tax-sheltered accounts.

• Learn to manage your savings—basic financial skills can help with big decisions.

• Don't count on working, as many workers retire earlier than they expect because of job loss or health issues.
