Petrol Still A Curse Iran Cannot Avoid Predators

It is doubtful if any country would embark upon creating a nuclear weapons retalisatory capability unless they believe it was necessary to protect them from any nation(s) having such an arsenal. I cannot imagine how it must feel for the average Iranian to keep hearing threats that they will be nuked if they do not comply with the orders of the new master of Planet Earth- the U.S. How many Americans are aware of the successful attempt by Iran to create the first democratic nation in the Islamic world which was terminated by the CIA at the behest of Whitehall in London and British Petroleum in 1953. At the time the Iranians had the temerity to nationalize THEIR petrol industry thus depriving BP of the many decades of their monopoly on that resource. Of course, this CIA came at a cost as BP was forced to give the American oil companies 50% of this lucrative "pie." All the CIA leaders were rewarded with lucrative no-show jobs for their successful efforts in this that organizations first such success. In time, the ascension of the Ayatollah's coup (which forced London and Washington's stooge, The Shah, to flee) and there has been no hope that peace between Iran and us, and those allied with us, can be possible any time soon. Steve, World War 2

Iran is the real issue for Israel....

While I have no Iranian background, I have had personal contact with four Iranians who have been unjustly jailed by the various murky authorities there. I have no brief for the Islamic regime there.

But I also do not think that Iran (at the level of Supreme Leader Khamani) is looking seriously at major unilateral attacks, nuclear or otherwise, at anyone, be they Israel or the other Sunni states. They might have thought of attacks on Sunni states in the early years of the Revolution, but not now, after the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980's.

It is not a suicidal regime bent on slaughter of millions. They would have killed their own citizens in that quantity if they were. A carrot, along with a very strong stick, along with lower oil prices, will advance relations with the Persians.

Now if something can be done about the West Bank settlers to miinimize that particular issue....

Iranian and Muslim attitudes

For over one thousand years, Jews in the land of Israel,Iran, and the rest of the Middle East were treated by Moslems as 'dhimmis'; somewhat akin to the Nazi's 'untermenschen'. That the Dhimmi Jews should rule over a land that was once under Moslem rule, the strident Moslems cannot abide. Israel and Iran had good relations, when Iran was led by the not-stridently religious Shah. Since the Jimmy Carter lubricated take over of Iran by the stridently Moslem khomeini and other Ayatollahs, the leading long-termbpolicy aim of Iran has been the destruction of Israel!

always the same topic

The world doesn't revolve around Israel. For a country with such a very small population, there is a completely disproportionate media response given to it. Day after day we must endure hearing about all of their issues. I want to hear about the many countries in the world that truly have problems. Much of the world's population does not even have their basic needs met. This group includes billions of people, not a few million. Maybe it's time for the media to branch out.

Iranian Policy in ME: Bait and Switch

Mr. Zuckerman, I believe you like many others fail to conjure the true nuanced steps that have lead to the hard won success of Iranian policy in the region.

On the Sunni and Shia Streets of the ME and Persia, minus Iraq, The Iranians are seen as the only country fighting Israel--ideologically, rhetorically and by armed conflict through proxies Hezbollah and Hamas.

Rhetorically, Amadinejad's Jew baiting is aimed domestically toward Iran's victims of a broken economy with 25% unemployment and 30% inflation, a misery index that exceeds even best efforts Jimmah Carter.

Amadinejad shorthand: "Don't worry friends our Enrichment Program will give Iran power over Israel. It's an investment in the greatness of Iran that will lift our people up as Allah intends."

Amadinejad's message to the Sunni Street is "Iran's Enrichment Program is no danger to you my friends. Our common foes are the Zionists in Israel including their Zionist backers America."

The rhetoric was enforced and consecrated by Hezbollah's picking a fight with the IDF in 2006, an act one equate more as an attempted Iran forced tipping point in a then splintered and disintegrating Iraq than anything else. The long unchallenged rocket fire by Hamas and the inevitable invasion to silence it was more of a straight up reassurance Iran is the unparalleled Jew fighter in the region.

Peace in the Holy Land is the last thing the Iranians want or need.

Iran’s status in the region as the proven, implacable foe of Israel burdens Sunni leaders from the House of Saud to the House of Mubarak. For a Sunni leader by rhetoric and action to go against the Iranian Enrichment Program is to align his state policy with Israel, the US and the rest of the West. Now that Iran has carved out its support on the Sunni Street by rhetoric and action, little is heard publicly from Sunni leaders in irons challenging Iran’s aims, intentions and nuclear program.

The Israelis have every right to fear the threat of a Nuclear Iran, but the supreme leader must understand he’s years away from throw-weight parity. A nuclear Iran will have the throw-weight advantage on the Saudis and GCC which will translate to Iranian Hegemony in OPEC. More important, an apex goal of the Mullahs is removing the US and NATO and their freedom of the seas mission from the Iranian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. These are Iranian goals that pay immediate security, economic and political dividends after the heavy political and economic costs of pursuing their outlaw Nuclear Program.

The last diplomatic and rhetorical trap set by a Nuclear Iran on these lines will be watching the Saudis and GCC scramble to explain that their states are under the under the nuclear umbrella of the Great Satan’s and Little Satan’s.

Israel is a target and will remain the ultimate prize but Israel is closer to the last step than the first by a politically and strategically nuanced Iran.

Hamas

The US wants to give $900,000,000 to Hamas, er I Mean the United Nations to rebuild Gaza. Hope and Change in action. Hope to destroy Israel and change it to an Islamic territory of Iran.
