The Country is Sliding So Far Left...
that the Green Socialists equate respect for life, duty, responsibility, self discipline and fiscal responsibility with fascism.
Traditional conservatives need to sit back and relax... Let the Obamatron army march over the cliff. Let's just hope when Republicans eventually regain control they don't simply become "Green-Socialist Lite"... Like the last time.
Bottom line
There will be more emphasis on abortion, gay marriage, "they're gonna take away your guns" and a few other "bugaboo" issues.
The Republicans really don't have anything else BECAUSE their real positions are 1) Corporations must rule, 2) The already rich have a "right" to get richer from income and estate tax cuts, regardless of the consequential deficits 3) The poor and near poor getting poorer for generations---including by means of paying all you've got (or more) for health care--- is not a problem
These do not really "sell" to average voters. Soooooo, back to first paragraph.
GOP
The GOP has earned all the problems they are having.
Until they come clean on all their dirty deeds and join in the efforts to repair all the damage they've done and become more inclusive, they'll continue to disintegrate. They have nothing constructive to offer. All they do is carp about petty things, trying to blow them up into something substantial. Nothing they say or do is believed because they have lost people's trust. Once betrayed, trust is difficult to regain. Had they not abused their power again & again then they'd not be having these problems.
There are no longer any Republican Jewish Senators. This week Rush the blowhard has been calling for Colin Powell to leave the Republican party. It's looking more and more like a party of white southern men with pre-Civil War/pre-civil rights attitudes and inflexible Christian fundamentalist mentalities.
That kind of thinking is ill equipped to successfully lead one of the world's great nations forward in healthy ways.
Bias
It does not take much reading of your article to see the bias. Calling Olympia Snowe "moderate" and Jim DeMint "right-wing" is a very telling sign. It amazes me how liberals move the middle left and then call anything to the right "right-wing." Anyone who is a traditional conservative is castigated. Such practices does nothing to improve discussion. It is polarizing and it is arrogant. While I do call people liberals and conservatives I try to reserve the extreme expressions for extreme people.
As far as Specter is concerned, he has always been an opportunist, changing parties with the wind. What's new?
As for Demint wishing for more committed conservatism. Why not? When polls show 60% of the American people calling themselves conservative why shouldn't we espouse those ideals. Maybe you are afraid that the Republican party will and that it will be effective. Perhaps you want them to stay "democrat-lite" and continue to fail.
*yawn*
Wow, more lefties saying how conservatives have to be like them.
You don't have to be religious to think gay marraige is a bad idea. Watch footage of a gay pride parade, it will show you all that you need to know on why a non-Christian like myself thinks its a pretty sick subculture. Gandhi would want to whack somebody with a stick after watching one of those gut-turning train wrecks!
I don't see what is wrong with DeMint's comment at all- I think it quite sensible that he would prefer to have a smaller group based on principle than a larger one that lies and sells out just to have more power. Would that more politicains on both sides were more concerned about the principles they were elected on instead of grabbing power.
Bravo, Mr. DeMint!
Matthew Shepard
Anyone who votes against hate crimes legislation based solely on religious bigotry... Well, you'll face your maker one day and I hope you have a good explanation for your support of violence toward your fellow human beings. Whether you support gay rights or not, this is something completely separate- this is violence against someone for being who they are. It shouldn't matter what you feel about someones life; what matters is that they can go outside without the fear of being viloently attacked and the attackers not being held responsible since their is no legislation protecting them. It is simply sick that anyone would vote for violence against someone. Perhaps we should start passing the violence on to those religious Nazi's who believe in a police state led by Christian values; values which go completely against the teachings of open your arms and heart to the outcasts of society. Read your Bible and learn- Jesus didn't speak to the masses, he spoke to the outcasts and tried to teach the masses to stop passing judgment. Your passage of judgment is the biggest crime agains religion; total hypocracy. Besides, if being gay were truly a sin, where is the word homosexual in the Bible? Why doesn't is speak about two women together? Stop bastardizing what you read to simply support your own prejudice and bigotry. Open your mind and your heart. This is legislation which supports values of not commiting acts of violence against another person. Even Jesus protected people whom stones were being cast upon. It's your decision and something you have to live with- your own hatred. It must weigh on your soul as it should.
Yada yada yada
I am amused by the constant barrage of eulogies for the Republican party from leftists who apparently have not noticed that they have lost their lead in "generic" congressional polls and that the Obama's favorable/unfavorable rankings show he has lost ground with 15-20% of the electorate.
By the way, Mashek is at least as wrong as Bachmann. The last flu pandemic did occur when a Democrat was president - LBJ. There was no flu pandemic in 76, that last such episode was in 1968.
The big problem
This article is one of literally hundreds bemoaning the Republicans and their being out of touch. While much of this is true it speaks to a much larger problem. That is that BOTH parties are even more out of touch then ever. The Dems are now in control because of the devestation of the Republican Party during the last 4 years but before that the democrats were considered out of touch, and as far as I can tell they have not changed much. This becomes even more clear when in poll after poll the American people say they support Obama, but almost none of his policies. how long can that state of affairs last.
The Republican are currently on the outs, but that will change. The only thing that won;t is both parties catering to the extremes at the expense of the American people. Amazingly it used to not be this way, and I have no idea how it can change.
Republicans
The Democrats must be laughing - it seems the GOP has adopted circular firing squads.
