Should Healthcare Reform Plans Include Coverage for Illegal Immigrants?

Is protecting everyone the best policy in the long run? And who pays?

Posted November 6, 2009

Proponents of healthcare for the undocumented say that the fight on immigration can wait and that protecting everyone is the best and least expensive policy in the long run. Opponents argue that, compassion aside, U.S. taxpayers should not be on the hook for that care. In U.S. News Weekly, Eric Rodriguez of the National Council of La Raza argues that the immigration fight can wait and that the issue of healthcare for all cannot. Daniel Stein of the Federation for American Immigration Reform insists that, compassion aside, the U.S. taxpayer should not be left holding the medicine bag. What do you think? Should healthcare reform plans include coverage for illegal immigrants? Take our poll and post your thoughts below.

cross-border health insurance initiatives.

SIMNSA, Health Net, Inc, JCI, As the United States debates an overhaul of its healthcare system, thousands of American retirees in Mexico have quietly found a solution of their own, signing up for the healthcare plan run by the Mexican Social Security Institute…[IMSS].

September 11 issue of the Guadalajara Reporter there appeared an article entitled Private Hospitals Prepare for Medical Tourism Boom, Medicare

“recently announced it would be investing 4.35 million pesos to bring private hospitals up to the standards required for certification by the Joint Commission International (JCI), an institution that accredits hospitals in Canada and the United States.

Behr commented they could just move to Mexico and set business there if we don't just accept paying high premiums on our own here. Are malpractice prices really the reason medical expenses are so high here? How many millionaires just go to an approved JCI facility abroad and say, "Don't worry about the middle class paying high premiums to cover MEDICAID/medicare. Nobody talks about MEDICAID. What expense goes to pay all the hospital and prescription costs incurred by extremely low income families working minimal hours if any at all just to stay on MEDICAID.

How much have our federal tax dollars been sent over the years to finance new hospitals to support the US industries that left the US to set up shop in Mexico, India, China,...

Are our tax dollars still going to hospitals abroad while US jobs are lost, insurance premiums go up along with healthcare costs, and utilities and food go up as well.

Can just anyone cross the boarder to live in Mexico without be extremely wealthy?

The Time To Act On Immigration Is Now, Not Later!

Rodriguez obviously does not have the best interests of the American people as his priority. While accusing those who believe in the rule of law of being "anti-immigrant" and of "fearmongering" he seeks to bully people into submission with the weapon of character assassination. We've seen it time and time again as the go-to strategy of those whose ideas cannot stand on their own merits. He simultaneously attempts to purify the offenses of illegals by referring to them as "unauthorized residents" and "undocumented people" (as though their only crime was some minor paperwork oversight!). People like him must resort to these underhanded, unpatriotic and sleezy tactics because otherwise they have no case whatever to make. This is not rocket science. Non-US citizens should not be allowed to come to the United States illegally, period. The back door enticements that people like Rodriguez support should be eliminated once and for all. Employers should not be allowed to employ them (you bet there should be "burdensome verification and citizen documentation rules"! - I've no doubt that he endorsed the policy of non-verification of income on mortage applications that nearly destroyed the world economy as well! ). Cuban citizens should not be eligible for citizenship as soon as their feet touch American soil. Children of illegals should not be made US citizens. These are typical of the mindless policies that Rodriguez and his ilk have pushed through over the years that have undermined this country for decades and brought about our current situation of being overwhelmed by illegals who, despite the fact that many are surely decent people (but many others are decidedly not so!) have overall had a detrimental effect on the quality of our lives. And now he would encourage us to offer the even more powerful enticement of taxpayer funded healthcare. Who in their right mind would not seek to sneak into this country given everything to be gained and no financial costs or criminal penalties of any type to bear. These are the type of actions that can have no purpose other than to bleed a country to death, and it certainly makes one wonder how a true American could support such destructive notions toward his own homeland. Rodriguez is wrong. While he clearly seeks to create another enticement now and postpone any consideration of true immigration reform to much, much later, the fact is that now is absolutely the right time to act. We can and should begin immediately, not only to cease adding incentives for illegals to break our laws and destroy our national wealth and culture, but to demand that the incentives that are already on the books be eliminated. Only then can we focus on sane, sound immigration policy based on both the needs of our citizens and our traditional considerations of humanitarian concerns. Only then can we reclaim our country based on the principles of law and continue to be a valuable resource for the rest of the world.

Health Care coverage for illegal immigrants

Any child born in the United States to an illegal immigrant should be covered the same as any other child born in the United States. Any child brought here illegally should only be covered for medical emergencies. Adults who are here illegally should only be covered if they have social security numbers (if they can get one) since they would then be paying into the system and should be entitled to the benefits of that system. If the immigration laws are amended to allow illegal immigrants to stay under some specific conditions then they would become covered when the comply.
