Should Obama Send More Troops to Afghanistan

Posted October 5, 2009

National Security Adviser James Jones said Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union" program that he did not "foresee the return of the Taliban" to Afghanistan, adding that the country is "is not in danger—imminent danger—of falling." This forecast comes nearly two weeks after Gen. Stanley McChrystal warned that without more troops, the U.S. counterinsurgency mission in Afghanistan would likely fail. President Obama and his administration are still reviewing strategy in Afghanistan, yet his critics say that if he does not move quickly, more U.S. casualties, like those that occurred Saturday, will be suffered. What do you think? Should the Obama administration send more troops to Afghanistan? Take our poll and post your thoughts below.

Afghanisstan;

President Obama should be a peace maker not a fighter like some U.S. former Presidents. He should withdraw all U.S. forces from Afghanistan. There is no need to be spending unnecessary money in that country. He should concentrate on the improvement of this country's economic and its safety.

I just want to know

My husband is a Marine with the 2nd Maintenance Battalion of CLR 25 (2nd Maint Bn). He is gearing up to deploy with the CLC taskforce 16, and right now we are waiting on this decision. I know it is a big decision for the Commander and Chief to make but I am sick of waiting just make the decision already. I can't even plan a trip home for thanksgiving due to the fact that my husband could only get 3 hours notice of deployment. So I sit and wait everyday I sit and wait and worry and I just wish I knew something already. Everyday I pray that what ever the decision that God is with my husband and his entire unit is he is deployed. I just want my piece of mind back and knowing is the only way that is going to happen. My husband signed up for every bit of this and wants to go. He is upset that troops he knows were killed Saturday and he was not there he fills like his job is there with his brothers in arms. I understand this, but I do not want him to go. We have two daughters one 5 and one 8 who make the biggest sacrifice of all and well I just want people to know that we need to stand behind our troops because they are all someone friend, brother/sister, dad/mother, uncle/aunt, cousin, boyfriend/girlfriend and the lest we can do is support them and the sacrifice they all make for us.

No!

I am sure every single person who is saying “yes Obama should send troops to Afghanistan” are most likely not in the military, or know someone who is. Some people have no idea what it is like to be in a different country other than the US, let alone one that is going through poverty. I do not think Obama should send any troops to Afghanistan if he wants his country to respect him. People are dying over there yes, but the solution is not to send more troops over hoping it will all work out. Don’t get me wrong there are some people who join the military because they want to go to war and be a hero. Then again you have kids joining just for the benefits that the military offers. It is not right to start sending lives away just because of what one man thinks will happen. Sending more troops over might be the society’s view of what is right, but it is definitely not in the least bit ethnical.
