To Mr Gottschalk of WI

Sir, the man you are talking about actually sounds a lot like our former President George Bush. I don't remember him ever really listening to the American people, and he certainly never said much about the environment, global warming, energy or medical plans. As for you running the country, well, go ahead and run for President. Everyone has the opportunity, so go for it. But when you do, please do not spend time attacking someone and acting like you are better than them. We are all human, all equal, and all deserve a chance. Bush had a chance, so now let Obama have a chance.

To Mr Roisman of CA

Thank God our country is not what is was like prior to the Civil War!!! There was chattel slavery here!! But, since you bring this time in our history up, let's talk about the next sentence of your blog -- "that people who have merit and ability should get the job or the position". I'd like to put that int he context of the Civil War sentence. Tell me, sir, what merit and ability did it take to enslave millions of people and kill others (Native Americans) for their land? I'd like to believe that you didn't intend your blog to be interpreted this way, but putting those two sentences so close together inspired this response. By the way, I was "bused" during the 70s and it was an awful experience. I had to live through what should have been happy years in school, but became a living Hell amongst racists who did all they could to hurt and discourage me. So, I tend to agree, busing is a great waste of time and money and is also damaging to the kids who get bused in. However, it is done because certain people have horrible schools in their neighborhoods and no one seems to believe in improving those schools. Just ship them out of their culture, families, and safety zone. Into a place where people hate them. Sad. No, we cannot integrate in this country, so long as there are "haves" and "have nots", classes who once owned slaves and classes who never did. And that second class includes poor white people, so, in some ways, sir, you are right -- it's not a question of color at all.

destroying our couhtry

we now have a president who has no background in military ,business,or world events.he never had real job and his friends were not the type I would recomend for help. you cannot just keep spending money you don, have this will destroy what economy we have left. he is not listening to the majority of the american people on global warming, energy, medical plans and other subjects.nuclear power is one key, also using our resources like oil. itwill take years to get other sources of energy, use what god has given us,look at canada with oil from shale.I;m a retired former marine with but a high school educatin, but I think I could run the country better than obama ever could.if he keeps ignoring the people of this country it will lead to a disaster.god be with us, obama isn;t

Affirmative Action....

Affirmative action has little or nothing to do with democracy and the american way of life.... what our country was like prior to the civil war does not exist anymore....we have to go back to the theory that people who have merit and ability should get the job or the position not the color of a persons skin......busing people out of the local neighborhood to achieve "Integration" is another great waste of time and the taxpayers money.....the only integration worth talking about is personal and psychological and that is the integration of a persons body , mind and spirit.....Cordially ...

No - Still Needed

Obama's election is an indicator of massive improvement and, I hope, a sign of further improvements ahead. But down at our level in the workplace, today doesn't look or feel much different than it did a year ago. Affirmative action is still needed, especially during economic difficulties. It is human nature to chose others like yourself, even if the differences have nothing to with one's ability to perform a job. Without something pushing against nature, bias is self-perpetuating.

What is Affirmative Action?

Affirmative action!!!. Is it another catch frase? Is it a word that will make the mind remember the man? "A Chicken in Every Pot" ? "Walk Softly but Carry A Big Stick" now "We Have Overcome". Does anyone really know what is going to happen next? What have we overcome? Have we left behind the real reason we elect someone? I do not believe the "Electoral College" actually gives us the person we want as President, but rather who the congress wants. It is very obvious that a very simple down to earth person will never be elected. This person can not afford to purchase this right. Maybe this is what we should try to overcome. We should try and figure out who or what is the average! We The people of the United States have become so overwelmed with others things, that We have given up our real rights. We forget that We elect a person to serve us. By the People For The People. Its a very simple concept, our elected officials are suppose to doing what the majority of the people want. It appears that instead we are being told what we want! I am still waiting to see if any Elected Official can or will actually keep a majority of his or her campaign promises.

I know our New President has a large hole to fill. I am worried however that too much is trying to be accomplished at one time. The butting of heads between parties is not making "Checks & Balances" but rather pure failure! If the people of the "United States" want something to happen, then its time to speak out!! Our "Elected Officials" are suppose to listen. Why not tell them what we want? It is after all "Our United States" we should therfore stand United and demand improvement, demand a stop to Government Waste, and overspending. Affirmative Action should mean, cleaning house, make jobs that actually benifit all, and get rid of the complimentery no-show jobs. Put the tax dollars to use where they will be for the "Good Of The People" not the the good of the few.

I am not sure what "We will Overcome" or We Have Overcom" is really suppose to mean. we certainly have not overcome this recession, we have not overcome high fuel prices. We have not overcome the fact that the US sends so many of its jobs outside the country because it is more cost effective. Some of our largest industries no longer exist because the us labor rate is too expensive. Our Steel Industry which was a Giant at one time is slowly shrinking. These are some issues to overcome!

I personally feel using "Joe The Plumber" as an example of the common man was wrong. I don't know if everyone has had a plumbing problem lately, but have you seen the bill from "Joe" I can't afford to hire him, but then again, my income is Tens or Hundreds of Thousands of Dollars below the so called average income. (according to some political beliefs) I wish I could Overcome that!!

Affirmative Action

Its time to change "We Shall Overcome" to "We Have Overcome"! Top athlete in the world, Tiger Woods. Top actor in the world, Will Smith. Top politician in the world, Barack Obama. Perhaps the last vestiges of racisim are not dead, but using it as a crutch certainly is. Let's start with the Sotomayor judgement in the fireman ruling as a vehicle to make things right.
