Does Obama's Election Mean We Don't Need Affirmative Action Anymore?

Posted June 11, 2009

Writes John Farrell: "Obama's election was the sign we've been waiting for. It is time we do away with preferences and recognize people, as Martin Luther King urged us, by the content of their character." Is Farrell right? Has affirmative action's time come and gone? Post your thoughts.

To Mr Gottschalk of WI

Sir, the man you are talking about actually sounds a lot like our former President George Bush. I don't remember him ever really listening to the American people, and he certainly never said much about the environment, global warming, energy or medical plans. As for you running the country, well, go ahead and run for President. Everyone has the opportunity, so go for it. But when you do, please do not spend time attacking someone and acting like you are better than them. We are all human, all equal, and all deserve a chance. Bush had a chance, so now let Obama have a chance.

To Mr Roisman of CA

Thank God our country is not what is was like prior to the Civil War!!! There was chattel slavery here!! But, since you bring this time in our history up, let's talk about the next sentence of your blog -- "that people who have merit and ability should get the job or the position". I'd like to put that int he context of the Civil War sentence. Tell me, sir, what merit and ability did it take to enslave millions of people and kill others (Native Americans) for their land? I'd like to believe that you didn't intend your blog to be interpreted this way, but putting those two sentences so close together inspired this response. By the way, I was "bused" during the 70s and it was an awful experience. I had to live through what should have been happy years in school, but became a living Hell amongst racists who did all they could to hurt and discourage me. So, I tend to agree, busing is a great waste of time and money and is also damaging to the kids who get bused in. However, it is done because certain people have horrible schools in their neighborhoods and no one seems to believe in improving those schools. Just ship them out of their culture, families, and safety zone. Into a place where people hate them. Sad. No, we cannot integrate in this country, so long as there are "haves" and "have nots", classes who once owned slaves and classes who never did. And that second class includes poor white people, so, in some ways, sir, you are right -- it's not a question of color at all.

By Tom Davis

Seven lessons the parties need to learn from Tuesday's races.

The 2009 off-year elections in Virginia, New Jersey, and New York's 23d Congressional District offer a small snapshot of the current views and motivations of the American electorate. While there may be a desire to extrapolate the events of Nov. 3, 2009 into a prediction of what will happen on Nov. 2, 2010, that is impossible.
