Is Obama Playing Identity Politics by Picking Sotomayor for the Supreme Court?

Sotomayor

When she states in her own words that the Appeals Court made POLICY, why on earth would anyone believe she is not about her own agenda verses true interpreting of the law. The law which is to be BLIND to color, race, and creed...... she is obviously NOT.

Supreme Court Judge

Let us NOT choose a person because they are male or female. Were we supposed to choose a president that was a female because she was a female? That should not be a consideration. And where the person is born, and his or her ethnicity should not be the issue! Will this person be unbiased? Or will they give others with their own background the breaks? It should be someone who is acquainted with the law and the Constitution, and who will apply the laws justly, with all fairness. We don't need a person who will look out for those of his or her own ethnicity. Everyone needs to be treated fairly, not just a few of us.

Catching the truck

President Obama is about to catch the truck he has been chasing with this lady! I suspect the liberal left is about to get their proverbial *** kicked, LoL!

She has no allegiance to anyone except her own view of what is right and wrong. All of us can interpret the constitution and the law to serve our own perspectives. A good example is the prosecution vs. the defense. How many innocent people have been convicted because of how the facts were interpreted?

Be careful what you ask for

Sonia Sotomayor

People need to read what jurors adhere to in order to be accepted. They are held to higher standards than what Sonia Sotomayor would be in being accepted for the highest court in the land.

Too Much Smoke, Not Enough Fire

All this nonsense about "credentials". The credentials for one party are what keeps the members of the other party awake at night. It's a dead-end debate. Political positions aside, Sotomayor is obviously intelligent enough to serve on the high court. Another fallacy in this whole mess is the idea that judges are perfectly objective in the first place. They are human, and they are interpreting laws written by humans. If you want total objectivity, eliminate the SCOTUS and replace it with a supercomputer.

Hold on a Minute

To make the statement that this is a good choice might be a little more than over positive.

I care little about the Supreme Court reflecting American's diversity. A Justice on that highest court in the land should have the highest of credentials, period.

To have anyone that publicly makes the comment that they make better decisions than others because of their ethnic background is outrageous and it's racist, I don't who says it. This person should never be on the highest court. God only knows what she says in private.

Sure she has a great life story but this does not make a great Supreme Court Justice, and this country deserves nothing less than great people on the court.

Not a Problem

This conversation comes up with every candidate/appointment. We all are products of our upbringing, education and culture.

This is less heated when a white male stands there and says - "yes - I look and act like you (most of the other white males), so have no fear about how I will make decisions... "

Alito and Scalia both made the same comments as Sotomayor about the lower courts "making law", and having their religion and upbringing having an impact on how they see cases. Where was all the Republican consternation then?

The court should reflect American diversity, but never compromise on credentials. There is nothing wrong with selecting a Latina who is every bit as qualified as any white male out there.

Obama has made a good choice, and again has just delivered on a promise he made during the campaign. Why are so many surprised? Obama is not threatened by intelligent women - look at his wife. Obama is used to diversity - look at his family. He does not see all this as such an intense ethnic pick. He was impressed with her qualifications, and by what she said when they spoke.

The media again is making this bigger than it needs to be. TOO MUCH HYPE ABOUT HER ETHNICITY. The media needs to give it a rest, and let Congress go through the process without reporting every time someone scratches their nose.

Identity Politics

I am a "New York Rican" born in, and raised in new york city myself (1962). I am a successful hard working operations manager, and I would liket to tell you all first hand I am not happy with what looks like my well educated, angry aunt being paraded down the streets of our country, and into the living rooms of all on a soft racial tolerance message.

Our new gov't needs to understand that the people will more identify with the quality of the nominations independent of the story that plays well with soft music on a commercial. We are not that gullible.
