Is Dick Cheney Right About Colin Powell Leaving the Republican Party?

Former VP Dick Cheney thinks so

Posted May 12, 2009

Over the weekend, former Vice President Dick Cheney made public his views on Colin Powell's place in the Republican Party. In Cheney's words: "My take on it was Colin had already left the party. I didn't know he was still a Republican." The former VP followed up with this explanation: "He endorsed the Democratic candidate for president this time, Barack Obama... I assumed that that is some indication of his loyalty and his interest." Is Cheney right about Powell? If so, would Powell have a place in the Democratic Party? Post your thoughts.

Colin Powell

Colin Powell merits no respect. I do beleive that he endorsed Obama because of race. Really sad! I would have voted for him prior to this. His political career should be over. Rush at least has the guts to say what many of us are thinking. It is not solely the Republicans who messed up this country. We are a country full of hipocrits and bigots. This election clearly showed the worst in us. We are a greedy nation who wants to be a burden to those who made it. We are jealous that we have not. Class? Race? Age? Gender? Did we make it okay during the Presidential election to discriminate? Democrats led Congress for the past four years yet we blame the Republicans only. Bush spent (wasted) 495 billion and we screamed bloody murder. Yet, our new President just (really wasted) 1.2 trillion and we have nothing to say??? Bush spent 45 million on his inaguration and we yelled and this one 150 milion and we said nothing. Realy sad!!! Do we have morals????

SoCal Gal of CA,

For a Republican you sound suspiciously like a Democrat, as you’ve got their talking points down pat. What you’ve done here is to repeat the typical Democrat caricature of Republicans that I’ve heard all of my life. If you were a Republican you would know it’s not true and resent the mischaracterization. You obviously don’t even know what it means to be a Republican. I don’t believe you or Powell are Republicans. This a typical Democrat attempt at deception from a member of a party that can never be honest about their motives.

Dick Cheney should go

I wish that there were a rock that the Dick Cheneys, Rush Limbaughs and their ilk would crawl under. They have done a lot of damage to the party and our Nation. I'd like Colin Powell to stick around and more moderates like him to step forward and take leadership roles within the party.

I've been a Rebuplican for most of my adult life, but I admit that in the end I will vote for whomever I see as the best candidate for the times. It wasn't Mr McCain last fall. Until the republicans remember that they are the party that stands for the entrepeneural spirit that made our country great, they will be floundering. They need to move beyond the religious right and focus on personal responsbility, limited government and freedom of choice. Limited government doesn't mean a free-for-all for the well connected, but clear and enforceable regulations and accountability to the public.
