The police have been shown to be terrible shots and terrible judges of gunfight tactics for over one hundred and twenty years, in the United States. Here is just one refereed survey of the data, from law enforcement itself:

http://www.theppsc.org/Staff_Views/Aveni/OIS.pdf

By contrast, CCW/CCP/CCL licensees are background checked, sworn, photographed, almost always fingerprinted, and proven to law enforcement's satisfaction to be free and clear of violent offenses, drug offenses, often ANY offenses, and free of mental defect, history of mental defect, and in good standing financially, and trained to handle, shoot, and carry concealed - a set of requirements which exceed most police departments'. Furthermore, those who carry concealed have had the experience of being armed in secret in public and the response is to humble, modest, and diligent in maintaining training, care, and devoted responsibility to being safe. Anyone who thinks a person, a parent, a professional, or any other typical permit holder fails to feel the crushing weight of responsibility the right necessarily entails is a fantasizer living in delusional naivete.

I invite any hysterical bigot against this civil right to attempt to gain a concealed carry permit in their home state (IL and WI hysterics need not apply) then comment after your experience. Otherwise you are projecting a personal hallucination, and your embarrassment is not pretty.

Although wannabe-Marxist internet commenters are known ignoramuses who can only type but not read, John R. Lott and David B. Mustard, 'Crime, Deterrence, and Right-to-Carry Concealed Handguns'. The Journal of Legal Studies, 26 (1997), pages 1-68, summarizes the life-saving benefits of concealed carry and lawful gun proliferation, as do http://www.amazon.com/Bias-Against-Guns-Everything-Control/dp/0895261146/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1240525352&sr=8-1

and Lott's lead-off volume "More Guns, Less Crime."

Permit holders are also trained to avoid, deter, disengage, and deescalate - points of which the tyrants who would lay us naked before the felons remain ignorant, not intentionally silent.

2nd Ammentment Rights

4/21 In our city of Salt Lake (I live in one of the subburbs0, there was an incident in one of the Salt Lake malls (Trolly Square) a couple of years ago where an off-duty police officer was having dinner with his wife--as I recall--when a crazy guy came into the mall and started shooting up people. Because of this officer's brave actions--pulling out his concealed weapon and killing the suspect, more people were not kolled or harmed. What a lot of people forgot was that Trolly Square had (and I think, still has) a rule against anyone coming on the premises with a concealed weapon. This police officer broke the law or the rule, in order to save several more people from being harmed. Ironical, isn't it.

One of the above commenters stated he feels those with concealed arms permits are not as well trained in the handling of firearms as policemen are, and could be more dangerous to people as a result of their lack of more training. Did I read him right? Did he really say that? Forgive me sir--really! Forgive me for being a little cynical but--duh?!? As correct as you are, you forget one serious point--the bad guy, the criminal, is less well trained as aa great rule of thumb, in the handling of weapons than those who carry concealed weapons. It's just a fact!

I recently read one of Louis L'Mour's novels wherein he had occassion to make the following statement: If we outlaw guns, then only the outlaws will have guns. He stated further that the only way we could have adequate police protection with-out private people having guns is to put one policeman in every home every night. Yeah, I know the above statement is a very common statement and likely Mr. L'Mour didn't actually say it first, but he is a good guy to attribute it to.

My opinion of the whole matter is that there are very synister forces (people) who are trying to abolish private ownership of firearms in order that they might take control of the world. I can back that opinion up. It is the only point of logic in the whole argument against private gun ownership. Nothing else makes any sense. If these people are successful, the outlaws will still have their guns as well as those minions who work for these people--still another type of outlaw or bad guy. No, folks! As bad as gunshot victims can suffer, we will suffer much more if private owners do not have their arms to protect themselves and the rest of us.

The Mentality of a Gun Carrier

I agree mostly that individuals should have a right to carry a gun in most places. However, I am concerned about the training of the individual who carries a fire arm. Unlike Police officers, average citizens are not trained to handle a gun in an adversarial situation. Many women carry handguns and when asked, do you want to kill someone, they say, "No". But really if you carry a gun, you should be willing to kill, is required. Policemen are trained to kill and are trained to follow procedures in order to avoid the use of lethal force. I think handing a gun to an untrained person may not have the desired results in a school shooting situation. However, I have always been of the mindset that a person armed is safer than where no one in society, but the criminals and cops have guns.

Homeland Security at my Doorstep

2 weeks ago a "Census Bureau" person came around asking way too many questions for me to feel comfortable about. Asked if I were married, how many people in the House, is the guest House occupied and if so how many people. I knew what he was, a spy for Homeland Security. I told him to go check the guest House out for himself and so he did. He walked around to the side of my house and I watched through the window as he what looked to be inputting information into a GPS unit. He then came back around to my front door and knocked again. I told him I don't like him being around and that it's apparent he wasn't there to take my guns away and that he is certainly a snitch to those who will. He looked at me funny when I then asked him if he knew about the FEMA concentration camps and said that yes he did know about them and that he would rather remain in the dark. I told him after whoever he works for is done with me that he's next. I then said I think you're really a snitch now "get lost!" so him and another man 2 houses down immediately got into a white mini van and took off. Now wait, if they were truly Census workers how come then did they not finish their routes and why was only my street chosen? I am worried about this activity being there is no Census going on and if there are reports of it happening then it's false reporting. I have spoken to someone who knows what's happening and they tell me that the Census Bureau is false and that the people really are spies and give GPS coordinances to special "Black Ops" that are paid hitmen to "Rendition" Dissident Americans accused of being Home Grown Terrorists based on thought crimes extending to the latest AIPAC report. It's true that Communists have taken over, I have been a victim of Eminent domain and lost everything before. Now I'm under constant threat of a fire fight with no way of knowing when it will happen. Let it not be said I did not try to get this information out of how fascist this New World Order has become. Simple Question makes with illogical statment

You accuse the writer of being "supporter of violence" because she suggests that having a gun free school zone also makes a wonderful killing zone for those who desire to kill.

Because she is in favor of being armed and prepared she supports violence? You just smeared several hundred thousand police, sheriffs, and federal armed law enforcement officers who are called peace officers for a reason.

In the same sense that nuclear arms has protected our national peace for over 50 years and many men died for the right to have peace and Liberty, the right and the act of bearing arms will protect us from those who want to do us harm.

Changing the mind of someone who has the ideology to kill people for any reason is fruitless. Yes, parents should do a better job of teaching their children, granted, but allowing teachers and pilots to carry guns, after being trained to use them will, save lives.

Historically that has been proven and is very logical according to that history. Your point is extremely illogical according to history.

Simple Answer to the simple minded

Supporters of Violence, huum?, you are a supporter of complacency, and view the world as so benign that no one can be hurt anywhere, were it not for guns.

There are 2 kinds of people with guns 1. the 99.99999% of those that own guns that are law abiding, and the .0000001% of those that own guns that are not law abiding. Do not be so foolish to create a rule based from the smaller percentage that colors the larger percentage. Do not take an otherwise isolated incident and try to pretend that it is the common rule.

antidepressants

why is there no mention of the brain altering chemicals these kids were on at the time........? antidepressants!!!

Simple question...

You seem to tout Columbine as a RESULT of gun control? Where did those students obtain their weapons? They were not your "bad guy[s]" trying to enter a campus. They were already there and the pervasive attitude that accepts the level of violence present in this country is a causation. Your concept that seems to place an ambiguous "good guy' at the scene is simplistic and fails to address the overall climate that fuels these incidents. Your children will be safe at school when you and other supporters of violence realize that changing an ideology is more important than arming everyone and hoping they are too scared to die by gunfire to attempt anything. That seems like it would have been a wonderful dissuader to the Columbine shooters...
