Poll Wars: Two Surveys Read American Expectations for 2009...Wrong?

Americans expect economy to get worse, says one poll. Expectations improve with new year, says another.

  • 12: Percentage-point increase of Americans who think the economy's getting better since last month (Gallup)
  • 16: Percentage-point increase among lower-income consumers since August 2008 (Gallup)
  • 20: Percentage-point increase among upper-income consumers since last month (Gallup)
  • 56: Percentage of Americans who feel less secure about the economy than a year ago (Harris)
  • 21 percent: Americans who felt more secure about their financial situation in 2008 than in 2007 (Harris)
  • 12 percent: Americans who feel more secure in 2009 than in 2008 (Harris)
  • 52: Percentage of Americans who "think the economy will get worse" in 2009 (Harris)
