Frankenstein's Law: Congress Should Attack Immigration Laws, Not Immigration Agents

Lawmakers' use of "Gestapo" tag is wildly out of line, former immigration official Chris Battle writes

Even organizations staunchly urging looser immigration laws have come to the defense of ICE. In a letter last week to Gutierrez, the Anti-Defamation League chastised the congressman for his historically inept comparison of ICE agents to Nazis. "Whatever your views on the tactics and enforcement methods of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers...it is highly inappropriate and insensitive to suggest that actions by these agents in any way resemble actions taken by Nazi Gestapo agents in World War II," the league said.

If Congress doesn't want its laws enforced, then eliminate the immigration agency. Give the agents their pension, and everybody can go home smiling, including the illegal immigrants.

Or if Congress wants parts of its laws enforced, then get rid of the parts it doesn't like.

That's the rub. Meaningful and effective immigration reform will require political courage. The politicians will have to take clear stances—always an unhappy occurrence during campaign season. Whatever the reasons for its own policy failures, Congress needs to work in a bipartisan fashion to find a solution rather than a scapegoat.

Chris Battle is the former chief of staff at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. He is currently a partner at Adfero Group, a public affairs firm based in Washington.
