There's a big difference
As poor as the Democrats' prospects were in '48, Truman had a positive legacy to tout: not only Roosevelt's economic reforms and military victory, but his own winning of the peace, which arguably kept expansion of the Soviet Union's influence in check post-1945. What positives does McCain have to sell Americans on after 8 years of Bush? The suggestion is sound, but I don't know that it will work for McCain the way it did for Truman, even if McCain can sound as good off the cuff as Truman did, most of the time.
And I can also guarantee that Phil Gramm's "nation of whiners" quote will hurt McCain a hell of a lot more than Truman's "I like Old Joe" gaffe.
Truman Not Liked
Truman was not considered a good President until years after he left office.
The Internet makes a huge difference. The number of people seeing McCain is substantial
Was Truman honest or did he lie to voters like McCain does?
