Public Opinion: Is Barack Obama Moving to the Political Center?

Posted July 2, 2008

Sen. Barack Obama unveiled a faith-based initiative plan Tuesday, taking a page from President Bush's playbook. The presumptive Democratic nominee has also received criticism from the left for his decision to support legislation that would, among other things, grant immunity to telecommunications companies that helped the Bush administration's warrantless wiretapping program. Pundits point to these issues as evidence that Obama is navigating toward the political center in anticipation of the general election. Are they right? Has Obama become more centrist since clinching the Democratic nomination? Does it matter? Post your thoughts below.

He's just another politician...

Like Hillary, he would say anything to get elected. What he would actually DO in office remains to be seen - and I hope we don't have to find out. He is among the most left-leaning of Senators, and don't think that hasn't changed.

He is a JUNIOR senator...a novice...wet behind the ears. If he were elected, it would not be President Obama...it would be President Pelosi et al and our freedoms would be cut to a minimum. They are elitists. They think we can't run our own lives. They will tax and spend us into poverty. (You don't seriously think over-taxing the wealthy is going to provide "free" health care for all, do you? If so, please go back to school and take Economics 101.)

This second term of President Bush's has been quite disappointing, given the fiscal irresponsibility that has been shown. The Fed, printing money and only aiding the devaluing of our dollar hasn't helped either. Give us tax cuts - especially for the small businessman. Let us keep more of our own money so we can support our families and grow our businesses. Drill for oil wherever the oil may be, while at the same time working toward alternative fuel options. Stop wasting OUR money foolishly on pet programs - let cities build their own teapot museums and spend their own money on such nonsense without reaching into the pockets of Americans who have no desire to see it.

The poster who said oil prices would go down if Obama were elected has rocks in his/her head. Obama thinks these high oil/fuel prices are a GOOD thing. You speak foolishness.:

He's just another slick politician who thinks he can run our lives better than we can. He has a gift of making flowery speeches, but what does he say? Nothing. He's supposedly changed his mind on several things in the past year. Before even going to Iraq to see how the surge is working, he has already made up his mind what he would do to get our troops out of Iraq - and put them in Afghanistan - - he, who has never been in the armed services, much less commanded troops. Unbelievable.

Obama = Big hat, no cattle.

Barack Obama's Shift

If Barack Obama hasn't shifted to the right, then I've been paying attention to the political fray on another planet. I was astounded at his comment on the death penalty. Because there have been so many exhonerations of late, as well as so much recent scrutiny over the issue, in general, I would say he put his foot squarely in his mouth with that one - from a supposedly left-leaning, black, male attorney??? His vote in favor of retroactive protection for phone companies' illegal wiretapping was frightening.

Vote to extend secrets act

Well Obama is on his way to loosing my vote..How could he possibly vote to extend the secrets act! I have been under the impression that Sen.Obama was going to lead us back to a freer more open America instead he's going with the flow of the Rep. Congress. For shame.`
