Public Opinion: Should the United States Allow Offshore Drilling for Oil and Gas?

Posted June 17, 2008

Sen. John McCain has called for an end to the federal moratorium on offshore drilling for oil and gas. He hopes the move would help alleviate the rising cost of energy. Critics say that it would do little to lessen U.S. dependency on foreign oil but would threaten the environment. Should the United States repeal the offshore drilling ban? Post your thoughts below.

We have been drilling offshore for years now and we know hwo to do it better

I support "greener" ways of getting our energy but I am also a realist. If people really think these other "greener" initiatives are going to supplant our current oil energy needs, then they need to go back and really read up on this to get the real story. It will be years, if not decades before those methods come to really produce and handle the energy capacity we use every day just in the US.

The total world supply of consumed barrels per day now more than the the world production and it keeps growing with more countries with increasing energy demands and needs. The US produces over 5 millions barrels a day... BUT we need or use over 20 MILLION! Think about that for a minute before you deny what is best and let us drill!
