Public Opinion: McCain, Hagee, and Parsley vs. Obama and Wright—Whose Reverend Problem Is More Serious?

McCain and Obama have each rejected the support of controversial preachers. Whose relationship was worse? Tell us what you think.

Posted May 23, 2008

Among other pronouncements, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Sen. Barack Obama's former pastor, has said that the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks against the United States were an example of "chickens...coming home to roost." In a later sermon, he rejected the song "God Bless America" saying, "No, no, no, God damn America."

The Rev. John Hagee, whose political support Sen. John McCain sought, has said that the Catholic Church is a "great whore" and that Nazi Germany "operated on God's behalf" as part of a divine plan to drive the Jews to Israel. The Rev. Rod Parsley, whose political support McCain also sought, has described Islam as "the mouthpiece of a conspiracy of spiritual evil" and an "anti-Christ religion that intends through violence to conquer the world."

Obama has rejected and denounced Wright. McCain has now rebuffed Hagee's and Parsley's endorsements.

McCain backers say that Obama's relationship with his former pastor is more significant and disturbing, while Obama supporters argue that McCain's having sought the political support of such controversial figures is more significant and disturbing. Which relationship—if either—is more critical? Post your thoughts below.

Our hope is in JESUS THE CHRIST! And we must pray that Mr. Obama is being led by our LORD and SAVIOR JESUS. We are to be careful and not judge anyone. If we judge we will surely be judged. We have to let race and the color of ones skin be buried. Come on people it is dead. What about the content of a mans character does not that mean anything? America has come a long way and still has a very long way to go, the truth is do we have time to wait that long. Jesus is on His way back coming for a church without spot or blemish. We should come together and pray that our country with it's newly elected president be led of the Spirit of GOD and everything else with fall into place. Everyone deserves a chance be it democrat or republican, black or white, jew or gentile. We need to practice love as the bible speaks of because GOD is love and no matter who we are if we dont have love in our hearts we are not HIS! If you're black you can't just love blacks and if you're white love only whites, we have to love everyone regardless of their ethnic background. God said in the last days He would pour His Spirit on all men, no specified race of people but all men (that includes woMEN also!). We're in the last days people if you don't already know it, lets stop raising hell and raise love through out the land.

What is going on in our nation

I have seen society go back and forth about so much garbage. It has seriously become a popularity contest. When are we going to get back to basics as a society. We are being neglegent to our own moral and values by letting our standards fall so low that it is affecting every area of our business, economy, and christianity. The church has become corrupt and religious social club or feel good. It was supposed to be so simple and is simple to understand. Let your yes be yes and your no be no. The true church of Jesus Christ is from within. A relationship with God is an everyday walk of prayer, fasting, and listening. It is not motivated by our own agenda. This is what it has become. Pastor Parsley is a good man and has pastored a great church for many years. I have had the privledge of attending his church for the last couple of years. I have witness first hand his character and integrity and he stands for truth which is shaping our culture. How dare we put a word against God's man whom God is using. There is always going to be opinions but when they become slanderous against a person of faith then we have aproblem. We can have islam prayer taught in our schools but we cant have classes about a Savior who died for us. There is no contradiction in a relationship with God. Because God's light and love will shine in that persons life as a testimony for others to follow. We need to check ourselves. In the Bible God states: if those who are called by name shall humble themselves and prayer, turn from their wicked ways, then will i hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and HEAL THEIR LAND. Wow how simple..we need to repent america and get back to bible basics...

the end is near and i pray God help us all.

John Hagee is a man of God whose words were taken out of context. McCain would have done well to seek his endorsement.

As far as I can tell Obama stands for nothing Godly and Mr. Wright is a racist. Many of Obama's associations disturb me.

The 2009 off-year elections in Virginia, New Jersey, and New York's 23d Congressional District offer a small snapshot of the current views and motivations of the American electorate. While there may be a desire to extrapolate the events of Nov. 3, 2009 into a prediction of what will happen on Nov. 2, 2010, that is impossible.
