News headline: January 4

"Global sea ice ends year at same level as 1979"

Gee, didn't read that here, did you?

Ice Melt

The oceans are not rising - that is a fact, so I think their assumptions are wrong.

Wrong Title, Wrong Article

By taking a stance opposite to the mainstream, they could have had a good article. With just a little checking, the author might have wondered why such articles are coming out in other media. He could have gone here, for instance:

http://nsidc.org/data/seaice_index/images/daily_images/N_timeseries.png

Then he would (perhaps) have noticed that extent of Arctic ice for 2008 is well above that of 2007. It did take a dip in the last few days, so maybe that is his concern.

In the Piedmont of NC, we've been suffering through 6 weeks now of daytime temps 15 to 20ºF below normal with nighttime lows of 10 to 20ºF below normal. We have, in fact, already experienced the temperatures that constitute a "normal" winter, and it occurred in the fall, with winter yet to come.

Overpopulation

I wouldn't be too critical of Al Gore, but yes, overpopulation is the one of the main problems, along with global warming, much of which is photogenic.

The planet has exceeded its human carrying capacity by two hundred percent, so if the population explosion continues unabated, then something will have to give.

Global warming will ultimately be one of the limiting factors on continued human population growth.

A casual glance at satellite images of the Earth at night shows the lights of numerous cities that have been cooking the atmosphere all night, every night for decades. Two thirds of all global energy production is wasted, especially on lighting. This lighting has serious ecological and environmental implications, and much of our global warming problem would be rectified if eliminated lighting that is not necessary.

Lighting should only be used sparingly, where needed, when needed, and in the correct amounts. Street lighting should 45 degree full cut-off and only be applied in city centres where a twenty four hour society prevails. Rural and suburban areas should be left unlit. All domestic outdoor lighting should be motion operated and aimed downwards so that it does not cross property lines. They should require planning permission, so that the user must justify why he needs the light.

In order for guarantee the well being of future generations we need to cut back on energy production. A universal culture change is needed with a view to global energy usage.

Greenland

I believe Greenland was actually green at one time, and then cooled so that it became covered with ice and snow. What caused that? Now it may become green again.

What caused the glaciers to melt? Perhaps Al Gore could answer these questions, however he is way to busy jetting of to give a lecture somewhere in his private plane. Have to wonder about HIS carbon footprint.

Give a Source to Check.

Notice that in ALL the news articles flying around about this, NOT ONE gives a reference to a NASA source that the readers can check out for themselves. Another thing, ALL the news reports sound as if they were written by one person or group, they are simply parroting and not checking.
