Iran Keeps Its Nuclear Secrets From International Inspectors
The IAEA reports a “lack of cooperation” from Tehran
The International Atomic Energy Agency reported Wednesday that it is stymied in its efforts to resolve questions about whether Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons. The report, submitted to the IAEA's 35-nation board of governors, is available here.
"As a result of the lack of cooperation by Iran", the report says, "the Agency has not been able to make substantive progress on these issues. . . . Iran needs to provide the Agency with substantive information to support its statements and provide access to relevant documentation and individuals."
Unless Iran provides greater cooperation, it adds, "the Agency will not be able to provide credible assurance about the absence of undeclared nuclear material and activities in Iran."
The agency also notes that Iran has refused to comply with an order from the U.N. Security Council to halt its nuclear enrichment activities, which the United States and Israel assert are part of Iran's efforts to develop nuclear weapons. Iran claims its nuclear work is for civilian nuclear power, not weapons, and has refused to halt, despite being hit by international sanctions.
"Contrary to the decisions of the Security Council, Iran has not suspended its enrichment related activities," the report states.
