It just might apply here in the States as well, any blogger that dared to rail against the installment of the "Boy King"(no, Not Tutankhamen) will be tracked down - with Googles help of course !
Of course, when I think about a strong America, I think about our wars of domination or support of murderous regimes in Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Guatemala, Honduras, Haiti, and others. Central and South America will never flourish as long as there is a strong America that keeps it hands firmly around the throats of those countries. Fortunately, Bushco has completely failed to keep the traditional U.S. boot on the neck of the region, so freedom and prosperity are beginning to flourish there. Let's hope that the same happens to Russia, for the good of Eastern Europe.
Also, I think Putin would find McCain and his neo-cons just as easy to manipulate as Putin has found Bushco. Obama is a smart and shrewd politician -- like Putin, and like Putin is able to accomplish things without using military force. McCain is... well, he's not a smart and shrewd politician (although he is extremely volatile, the the threat of nuclear war would always be close).

Exactly, because the last thing that Russia wants is oil prices to keep going up, that would devastate the Russian economy. Thanks to McCain we have a hugely successful policy in the Middle East and that success will continue to reap all sorts of dividence viz-a-viz Russia, aka 100 years of occupation of Iraq, bom bom bom Iran... that will really show Russia now...
One more thought
It also should be pointed out that Putin is very interested in seeing Mr. Obama become the leader of the free world. Of the two potential outcomes that will determine America's new leadership this November, Mr. Putin and Russian interests are far better served to have the Obama/Biden ticket occupy the White House. On the other hand, Russian interests cringe at the thought of a war veteran, Mr. McCain, as the President of the US.
Russian knowledge of Mr. Obama's position on foreign affairs - i.e.: go out, meet with, exercise diplomacy - would be embraced by a strong, resurgent Russia. While the wolf may be scratching at our economic door in America; we can ill afford to allow a strong & resurging Russia to go "unchecked" in its strong armed applications to its neighbors in Europe.
I am not sure about Mr. McCain's economic abilities - however, I am confident of his abilities to deal with the Russians. Wall Street and Congress will have to work through the economy, regardless of how is president. Only the president can manipulate American interests abroad... McCain is the answer to this piece of the equation - not Obama.
The Stalinest Survive in 2008
Those that think Russia is a "potential" problem for the democratic nations of the world are behind the curve. Russia in 2008 "is" a problem for America and her democratic/NATO allies. A strong, resurgent Russia under Putin takes me back to seeing Soviet tanks rolling through the streets of Budapest in 1956 and again in Prague in 1968. The only difference is it is 2008 and the tanks rolled through Georgia. The great democracies did nothing in '56, did nothing in '68, and now, we do nothing in '08. It is no wonder the Soviet mentality of Stalin is now reemerging under Putin in 2008. He is taking his cues based on the historic actions (or lack thereof) of NATO and the US to their aggressive actions in Hungary & Czechoslovakia in '56 & '68.
I hearken back to George S. Patton’s remarks that we should have taken care of the Russians at the end of WWII, while we still had the men and materials in Europe to defeat them. Oddly, England’s Churchill felt the same way. Both of these men - long dead and gone - may yet prove to be prophets. Southern & Eastern Europe will never flourish as long as there is a strong Russia that keeps its hands firmly around the throats of those countries.
The best response American & NATO interests can champion is a quick recognition – even if it were only as an “at large/partial” – of the Ukraine and Georgia as members of NATO. Russia understands that kind of action. Russia respects that kind of action. The more isolated America & NATO can make Putin & Russia, the safer Europe will be. Russia may not like the actions of a strong NATO response, but they will learn to tolerate the realities of the new order in Europe. Anything less than this type response from the democracies will just continue to feed Russian/Soviet expansion and bullying of its neighbors.
